In a band, is there really a need for a rhythm guitarist if there aren't many lead parts? Does it make it sound fuller if there are two guitars playing the same things??

In order to answer that question more effectively, I would first ask you this:
    Are you an artist?
    What is your interest?
Why do you ask, for self-specifics' sake?
    Dont' fail me!

It does make it sound fuller.
Most bands will play a guitar with the pan/balance to the right and then play the same thing with it paned to the left, it gives it a bigger sound.

Let me explain...i play bass in a band but have recently been considering switching to rhythm guitar and adding my lead guitarist's brother as the bassist...i was just wondering if there would be a use for me, since we don't have a lot of leads in our older material

If I understand this correctly, and not much lead is done anyway then the rythm can just cover the lead when it pops up, however sparsely it does.

in my experience it really comes down to how well you get along with the other guy. If you can work out the parts without tearing each others faces off, then it will help the sound alot. It can also help everyone develop a better sense of the rhythm, and improve riffs.

If you cant get along, or there is a dramatic drop in one of the bandmates ability with the new alignment - go back to what worked as quikly as possible! Waiting only builds tension for everyone.

just my two cents there, hope it goes well for you!

Hey G man, I'm actually fond of the fact I learned to multi task my talent using screen masks and sleek slides.
It actually does enhance the self manifest of compsure, when you achieve the concept, I at least find it very self rewarding.
Then again I can tend to waste my talents writting shit sometimes, but that's also a contrast I provide myself with.
    It IS worth exploring.
I say if you play, you should try it at some point, what else to do except, progress?
