I don't agree with your original post to be honest. Popularity is a poor way to judge something. Popularity can be false, because some people try to act cool so they say they like rap/hip hop but they really don't. Nevertheless I agree with your point that they shouldn't be diminishing other people's tastes in music.
I agree that not everything that's popular is of good quality, but Hip-Hop is like any other music genre, it's got its good sides and its bad sides. I truly believe it was its good side that made it so popular in the first place. People don't keep listening to old school rap just because they show low rider cars in videos. They keep listening because its quality music.
