Hey i was just wondering if palm rolling and twisting and stuff really helps with locking up dreads or not. My dreads are about a couple weeks old ( i think) and i've already been getting some good advice from the forums, you guys are awesome. I'll try and post a picture if i can get one soon.
Depends. Some people swear by it, some say it doesn't do a thing. I think it helps to a certain extent...but I'm too lazy to really do it. Just wear a wool tam or tuque. It'll do the work for you.
To me, palm rolling only seems to really work for like, keeping them separated and looking a little more cleaned up... but I don't find that they seem to do much for helping them knot up quicker or anything. Twisting until the dread is really tight, and backcombing a bit with your fingers, in my opinion, helps a LOT... but most people will say to just leave them the hell alone. I find it very difficult to just leave mine the hell alone, because I get paranoid when they start to feel a little loose. Also, when I want to tie my dreads up (which has been happening alot considering it's been extremely hot out), I like putting beads near the root of each of my dreads, to keep the roots separated and from tangling together when they are up. Beads in general have helped me a lot, I think (they seem to help tighten a lot).... but it's pretty much essential when I tie them up, otherwise I find that they start sticking/tangling together at the roots and is a bitch to rip them apart. Other than that though, you just have to have patience Some will recommend lemon juice and sea salt... I used this mixture once right before I began backcombing, but haven't since... I didn't care for the salty residue it left on my hair, it was annoying.
never heard of backcombing or palm rolling or any "techniques" when i started mine, all i did was add a couple beads here & there & let nature do the rest.. apples & oranges, the salt rince shouldnt be left in, it should be rinced out shortly after u rince it through or spray it on, but i do agree that beads do help quicken the tightening process
I didn't have a good experience with the whole wool hat thing...it pretty much just made my dreads super frizzy and ripped them all apart...
I always palm roll my dreads. I think it helps them tighten, but who can be sure! I only palm roll after washing, when they're all soft and sqishy. It also helps getting them dry. I dunno really, all I know is that my dreads are tight. Keep smiling.
I'm one of those lazy dreadheads who just can't be arsed to palm roll. It'll sort itself out eventually. I do however, twist and play with my tips, but that's more of a habitual thing.. i do it without thinking now.
Yeah, I cbf palm rolling, im far too lazy. I do wraps some up and make beads for them, I palm roll and play witht he front few though. And theyre much less loopy, I dunno if thats a good thing or not. Thyre all just as tight as each other with a few exceptions
Yes, I washed for the first time since I did my dreads last night, and palm rolling after washing really helps much better than when dry, and it helps to dry them...agreed! Also, I like to use the sleeve of a wool sweater and palm roll with that when they feel like they are getting a little limp and loose
My cousin suggested to me, to wear a wool hat and rub it all around and what not... I wouldn't go that route because I had a vision of all my roots becoming a huge, giant mess in doing that...lol. Wool, I think is useful, but I wouldn't just rub it all over my head...
just wearring a wool hats a good thing..all the rubbing and rolling though id noit bother..if u do alittle absentmindedly without realizing that your doin it i think its not gonna hurt or help too much but if u spend alotta time doin it obsessively it could hurt the dreads over time and it certainly could make the process lesss enjoyable (to me if its work i cant bve bothered but if its entertainment..sitting back and watching what happens..then its an adventuree)
i dunno if palmrolling helps to tighten the dread. i used to palmroll Alot the first 6month-1st year or so, and i think it helped me alot to make the dreads round and firm so i will recommend it ,
I have had mine for only 7 days and it seems to make them tighter so far, but I am gonna get a wool hat soon to help them along
