Next week I get paid, so I'm going to buy some decks because I like to mix. Nothing too fancy at first (no technics 1210s/1200s for me :( ) , but something fairly decent to start off with and I'll probably buy a good mixer because they always fuck up and I want it to last for a couple of years.
Anywhos, I'm a bit scared...so I'm taking my mate along with me to tell me what's good and what's not, as he's an established DJ and has played nights like Technicality in London, various festivals, freeparties etc etc

I was just wondering if we've got any DJs on the UK forums? If so, what's your setup etc? What do you like to play, where do you buy your vinyl etc etc?

not in the DJ side of it more the Hi-Fi side of things, i have a valve amp and a reson rs1 deck with a goldring 1042 cartridge and it sounds pretty damn good. although my deck has been modified with a different tonearm and a glass platter

I have 2 x Technics SL1200MK2 which I've had for 7/8 years and are still going strong, have never been repaired. Technics are expensive but they do last, simplistic heavyweight components sort it right out. 2 x Pioneer CDJ100s which do the trick fine but when I have some money to piss away want to upgrade to 200s or 800s. Going through a Pioneer DJM600 mixer. Running through a cheap 1k amp and two Behringer B215 600w passive speakers. Will post pics later.

What I play depends on the gig (hehe makes it sound like I'm a big dj. I'm not), at clubs or parties mainly psychedelic trance and tekno and if outdoors then suomisaundi or ambient if it's sunny. Do a small internet radio show where I play whatever, breaks, funk, jazz, tekno, punk, whatever I'm listening to basically... Blah...

It's good not going for the most expensive stuff first of all, much better to work your way up. If you learn on top notch equipment you can be rubbish when put in front of crappy stuff, if you learn on cheaper stuff then you can only get better on more expensive gear ;) Good shout going with your mate though as there are a lot of shitty makes of cheap decks out there and he'll point you in the right direction I'm sure.

Buy most of my psy cd's online as next to none comes out on vinyl any more. Buy old school/goa vinyls on eBay (eBay's good for most genres!) and trawl a lot of second hand/collectors shops. Plus your standard small indie(pendent) shops etc for vinyl.

What style(s) do you intend on playing??

    Happy mixing!

Aye Rev, psytrance is soooooo hard to find on vinyl...I'm gonna start with the vinyls then get onto CD mixing.

I'm thinking of starting off with the Stanton Scratch Pack, as they're pretty good and recommended by my mate as the best starter decks he ever had. Plus, I get scratch needles, so they will be a bit sturdier!

I'm gonna invest in some decent headphones though....

I've learnt to mix DnB and Jungle, so I'm going to continue with that and then I want to go into Dubstep and Grime and also start mixing world beats and generally, a bit of everything.

Nice nice, looks alright and not a bad price...

The thing with CDJs is it's worth buying some decent ones. The cheap ones really don't cut it so well. Annoying thing being they're so expensive... Mine were £500 a pair and they're pretty damn simple... You can get more features for less by buying different brands but for CDJ's Pioneer is the only make really worth getting imo.

With headphones you can't really go wrong with sennheisers. I have these http://www.decks.co.uk/products/headphones/sennheiser/hd25sp which I found hard to justify handing over £70 for but the quality is amazing, really noticed the difference after using cheapo ones for ages...

There are plenty of decent enough Sennheisers for around £30 though!

I remember playing with a pair of those or v.similar must be what 16years ago, hip hop stylee. My younger brother and a few mates, some from Hackney, used to mix beats and rap, done a few shows.

Crossfader had to be a Gemini. :)

I dunno about that...I'm looking to go for a Numark mixer (hopefully one with a chaos pad) eventually.

    Cheers for the advice Rev.

As for speakers and an amp, I'm probably going to go second hand at first and then invest in new stuff when I become a bit more rich.
