gee, last time phish stopped everyone hopped on the Cheese train and it became a VERY odd place. Kinda like the Jerry's kids invasion of Phish in 95. I will give my brothers their due, and they are adding a second percussionist so Travis can up the richness of the drums. I'm hoping Jason will be a good addition. Kang does tip his hat to Jerry and Trey, I remember watching him dance his a** off a few times at a show. other Life after Dead bands for me were: Left Hand String Band (became Leftover Salmon) Panic (for a short while. I really liked Mikey) YMSB Cheese Keller 'til about 2000, pre Loop Zero Steve Kimock Jamie Janover Single Malt Band Chief Broom the Dead spin offs, including Ratdog, Other Ones, Phil & Friends Jemimah Puddle Duck Mountains of Venus New Monsoon- these guys have all the energy of young Cheese Papa Mali /bluesey swamp rock Albino! Railroad Earth Hamsa Lila Kan'Nal Tha Muse Meant Jim Page Shanti Groove has impressed me, but hope for an 'on' night Sound Tribe Sector Nine/ trance Signal Path/trance Do not bother with: Phix DSO unless close to free I'm sure there are more.... It's about the vibe for me.
I think if you see john lennon live, and snap a picture it's definitely worth it.. people would pay alot of money to see that lmao "holy shit! he's dead, but playing guitar over there!"
As far as the coolest scene I've seen, it would be the scene that swirls around Sound Tribe Sector 9, and Particle too. Both great live bands. Also: Primus, Keller Williams, Galactic... Donna the Buffalo is pretty cool if you are into more folkish type musak. Peace
I will be interested to see the added percusionist - my big thing is I don't ever want to see Billy with an electric guitar in his hand ever again. It just doesn't seem natural. Last time I saw them was in Amsterdam and when he pulled out the electric I wasn't impressed at all. I do still love cheese, but I have not dug their transition to more of a house/trance band over the past few years. If I want to see house/trance I'll see a STS9 or Particle show. I'll agree with you on New Monsoon, they are fantastic.
If you can truly recognize The Dark Star Orchestra's music as original interpretations and improvisations of Grateful Dead songs then you should go and attain awareness of your infinite nature. They're gonna be in Virginia soon and the midwest for a while so everybody see them OK! If you never got to see the Grateful Dead I strongly suggest seeing them anywhere you can. The Jazz Mandolin Project with John Fishman of Phish on drums is a truly transcendent and spiritually-expressive band. You can find a bootleg of their show from Bonaroo this summer, listen to it as soon as possible. I know other people will find this one pretty obvious but The String Cheese Incident are really doing something profound right now. Also Ratdog is about to tour and there's Ekoostik Hookah doing Hookahville. There's Earthdance starts on a the 17th of September in pretty much every city on the planet. So if you live anywhere on the planet you can probably pray for peace together. They're gonna set the world record for the world's largest drum cirlce lead by Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead out of Laytonville, CA. Remo Drums are gonna give away 3,500 drums to the public to make sure of that. Also see Leftover Salmon, Oteil Burbage, Robbie Kreger Band, The Big Wu, Soul Circle, and a Sound Tribe Sector 9. Ravi Shankar is doing a whole West Coast tour in May of '05 so everyone should come! Have a beautiful Fall everyone
Just got back from the Hippy Hill Hoodang, highlights from my evenings include Karl Denson, New Monsoon, and Brothers Past. Umphrey's backed out, along with a bunch of other bands I was looking forward to seeing.
If you havent seen Assembly of Dust yet, definately check them out! They just started another leg of thier tour which I'm sure will be filled with as much as if not more energy than thier last one. Reid Genauer is the frontman (former strangfolk member). Great lyrics, talented musicians. You can download some of thier live stuff from stonechior.com, but of course to see them live is a different experience. They tour mostly the NE so you're lucky. The next time I'll be seeing them is on the 24th this month at the Paradise in Boston. $15 for tickets in advance, $16.50 at the door but I would reccomend buying tix, they usually sell out.
I recomend The Wet Spots if you get a chance to see em! Most entertaining and halarious band i've seen
The Australian Pink Floyd Fleetwood Mac Bruce Springsteen Elton John The Guess Who Bob Dylan Willie Nelson Seen them all and all were awesome.
I don't know any 'hippie'-ish bands...but: Hatebreed Ill Nino Soulfly Otep Stuff like that....that's music at its best.
I just saw the Allman Brothers Band and it was a really amazing show. Derek and Warren are incredible guitarists, the 3 drummers are very good, and Oteil plays some really cool stuff on the bass.
One that is a must see is the ROLLING STONES!! <---kick ass all the time id pay 1000 dollers easy to see the stones
Korn and Linkin Park are very good live. System of a Down is excellent too, though I have only seen videos, but they aren't touring right now, sadly.
Uh, Cheese is the trippiest band out there right now. I mean VERY trippy and very good bands. YMSB is good and rock out live. Keller Williams is amazing live because it's JUST HIM making all that music, and then he usually has some friends come play with him which is awsome. New Monsoon is very cool and still sorta up-and-coming. I've never seen them live though. GOOD LUCK BROTHER!
