If you see a "Hippie"(???) walking toward you, and He/She has a tye-dye shirt, is wearing a beaded hemp necklace, has long hair or dreads, a beard etc., flashes you the peace sign, and is wearing loose cotton clothes and sandals.........................

....................And then when He/She starts to speak, all you hear is profanity (I think MF'er is the worst, and I am not a prude), and an over abundance of cursing and swearing, (and it's all in the attitude, not the words themselves-a strategically placed "fuck" is sometimes fitting for emotional emphasis), will you automatically think,

"OH, I guess this person isn't a Hippie after all." !!!!

Are appropriate language and peaceable, wholesome communication skills important in being a true Hippie.?

I think so definitely, if someone looks the part but is just like the rest of society today why call them a hippy?

in deep conversation, like talking about spirituality and feelings etc. i can go 3 hours without saying anything vulgar, but if i'm just sittin around with a couple friends bullshittin i'll throw out profanity like frisbees

it's all about the environment you're in, like if you're around your grandparents you're probly not going to be swearing, i don't think that your spoken words define who you are, since you can say anything and not neccessarily mean any of it

How the fuck does the way one **** chooses to say shit define anything about a mothafucka?

Most wankers don't use words such as "shit, fuck, bitch, asshole, motherfucker" and so on to offend people, but use it to show strong fucken expression.

    Fuck.

I'm not sure if i understand properly what you're saying (sorry!)
I have no problem with people using words like those above, unless they're pejorative/derogatory terms for groups of people (fag, ****** etc.)

I think our spoken words can only PARTIALLY define us because we are also defined by the choices we make, our actions and inactions, our ideas, etc.

When I swear I use it as an expression like "man, that is fuckin' awesome" ....but its not ever directed towards anyone (cept pervs) ...so I think it depends where you use crude language.
Sometimes you just need you need to tell someone to "back the fuck off" just to keep the peace.

I sometimes think people could delve a bit deeper into their cache of verbal possibilities, before they open their mouths and fill the air with low level, and grotesque modes of communication. Most of the time these words fail to express what people are really feeling (strong fucken expression ?), and if they hesitated and searched for others ways to say what they mean, maybe we as a people could speak to each other with a clearer and more concise vocabulary, and possibly even understand each other and work out our differences more peacefully.

When I hear others using abundantly, the above words that you so proudly displayed, I assume they are of fairly low intelligence and sensitivity ,and are probably not good at courteously communicating with others, and I usually avoid them. I never think of them as "Hippies", because people who are hip don't rely on language that is meant to offend or belittle to commonly express themselves.( Unless they stub their toe or hit their thumb with a hammer, LOL, or for occasional emphatic emphasis). They are always searching for words that heal and build love in the world, and have a bit of control on what comes out their mouth, and care how their words affect others.

I agree with you, it is all in the attitude and delivery, and also the frequency, they can become just lame words with no meaning at all, if overused, and very effective if used sparingly, and in appropriate situations. (pervs).etc.

Spoken words shouldn't be the only thing that define a person, but they do have a big impact on the way others perceive us. It is the most common form of communication and therefore the most opion...IMHO

    It's only words... honestly.

They are only considered "grotesque" because that's the way this society chooses to view them. I think that all words are beautiful forms of expression... and I choose to use them all.

My initial answer the the thread title was "FUCK YES!" lol, but then I read ABE's post and my opinion shifted a bit... I think that the words you use define you, only because speaking is a free way of expressing who you are and what you believe in. So, WHAT you say, the meaning behind the words, defines the person you are. But swearing isn't really that big of a deal to me. If it's used for emphasis is no biggie at all. But like ABE said, if the words are being used to offend someone, then it's not cool. Same deal if the person is being unmindful and insensitive. Everyone has the right to saying whatever they want, but they should also take responsibility for what comes out of their mouth and try an keep it as inclusive as possible. It's a great way to foster a peaceful environment. Just in mho. :)

    Peace energy.

a hippie can be wearing a suit and still be a hippie, because is a way of thinking and the attitude they carry, and words do reflect how you think and the attitude you have, so they do define who you are.
it all depends how you use words, some people choose to show themselves others to hide who they are.
