Anyone here dig joanna newsom? I heard her new album "ys" today and I can't wait to hear it again (I'm on a different computer) Its fucking amazing. I loved it, and anyone who says otherwise is just wrong. Your thoughts?
Its extremly well done, its unlike anything else made this year. Even alot different then her debut. Every song paints a story, and i love it. I can see how many can not get into it, concider the shortest song is 8 minutes long or something. I left this album in AZ, and probably wont get to hear it for a while, but i really enjoyed it.
I haven't heard the album but I heard one song and you can just tell there's lots more where that came from. Would you like me to "recover" that album for you, I'm in AZ right now.
Both her albums are amazing if you ask me. I'm addicted to "Ys" at the minute. I saw her live a few weeks go, backed by the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra they played "Ys" in it's entirety! She sounded fantastic, can't wait to see her again. Beautiful stuff.
I'm finally getting into Ys! whenever i dont "get" an album i listen to it over and over again until i do. OCD all the way, hooray
Ys is absolutely amazing, i'm still stunned at her lyrical abilities, i just can't grasp how it can be done! the album has a trippy feel to it, it takes you there instantly, it sums it up for me. Listening to her she sounds very sisterly to me, like a sister i never had.. she knows what shes talking about. i've figured out the first two songs but i need a dictionary for some of the vocabulary she uses- unbelievable how she can string these songs together, or even just a verse or part of a verse, sometimes it shouldn't work but it undoubtedly does! There's no other sound like it and the string arrangements and all the other instruments in the songs are perfect. This is amongst the best albums i have, in the same promised land as Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love", Roger Waters "Amused to Death" .. definitely the best album i've got in a while apart from Bat for Lashes "Fur & Gold" but again Ys is better but totally different.
i watched a video: http://stage6.divx.com/user/polliwog/video/1136687/Joanna-Newsom-Live-at-the-First-Unitarian-Church at the start of her first song you can see just how she changes, like she moves into another world before she starts playing, it's almost freaky just how much she gets into it. And by the looks of it she's putting everything she has into her performance, absolutely gorgeous, so much natural talent there it's almost unnatural! can't wait to see her in September in London, the day after my B-day lol woot!
Oh, that "old scottish traditional song" she plays just before the band enters is just soo beautiful!! Is there a studio-recorded version of it somewhere? what's the name of the song? I've listened to her quite a lot and must say I like her music better that old sweet just-harp-and-vocals-way. Ys sure is good too, but it's not the same.
She is such a gem! I'm a very big fan I love Sadie, especially this performance of it... http://youtube.com/watch?v=npvSMfhjt4A
She sounds wonderful I will have to check her out. bb Delfynasa who check out this thread just because of the gnarley title!
That's why I checked the thread out, too. I hadn't heard of her before, but I just watched youtube videos of "Sadie" and "Peach, Plum, Pear" and WOW! I was not expecting that voice, but I find its intensity wonderful. And like others have mentioned, it looks so effortless and natural when she plays. She actually reminds me of what Emiliana Torrini would sound like on helium...but that's not an insult. I like her voice.
