Do you think that a song's meaning should be set in stone as what the writer intended it to be or should a song be interpreted in whatever way the listener wishes to interpret it? why? Either way can be beneficial in its own way
I like mystical, abstract-ish lyrics, thus mostly personally interpretable. If the lyrics don't really tell much but just give off a certain feeling that's in tune with the music that's excellent too.
if the songs out there to get a message across then that's what it should do; if a songs out there to relate to the listener then it should have many meanings, depending on the listener but some also have a "proper" meaning along with it if you know what i mean.
A song should be to express what the lyricist has inside them, to get a message across to the world. That's why I don't like modern pop music, I get the feeling the artists only wrote some of their stuff for the sake of it to take other people hard-earned cash...not because they really feel that way!
for the most part i think it does depend on the song. hip hop i like better to be literal and based of their life expeirence, but i also love songs like stairway to heaven that can be interpreted however the listener wants to interpret it. it sorta depends on what mood i'm in
