ok so ium starting my first dreads. Basically iv just done the first one and its fine apart from there is quite a lot of loose frizzy hair around the lock. Is this normal or how do i go about making it tighter or is it something that can only really be done naturally from my hair? Cheers

? do you mean you are in the process of backcombing right now?

if so don't worry about it, i looked like coolio the first 3 days, then I stopped waxing the wax out and looked like sideshow bob for about two months...now I look like some dreadheaded kid....just back comb and leave it to do its own thing (minus seperating them when they start to grow together if you don't want to have one or three big dreads)

=) it takes time and patience, something that no one here can teach you

yeah, im like half way through doing my dreads now lol. I look well funny, all the dreads are stood on end because of the rubber bands. Thinking im going to keep them in for a few days though to keep them seperated. Can't be assed with wax to be honest. It looks like it makes them look a lot better (well imo anyway) but i dnt want to be a human candlestick really. Ill post a pic in an hour or so when iv finished. Anyway psycho just came on tv thank fuck i have a huge mirror in my lounge thats all i can say!

wax is BAD. NO WAX. stay away from the damn wax. i removed rubberbands the 3rd day, keeping them seperated wasnt a problem.. but then again, i had candles on my head, it was no way they would ever grow together

the loose frizzies are completely normal, and you'll have those for a while... it takes time for them to tighten up and do their thing.

don't forget, backcombing is just the beginning of it...it only helps kick start the dreading process...you still got a long way to go :)

    As do I....

Don't worry too much of how they look... embrace the process of it all :)

Everyone talks about how terrible they looked their first day or so... and I guess I did too, but it didn't bother me one bit... I actually loved it.

I love seeing how they change everyday and what not.
Don't be surprised if your dreadlings loosen up again, before they tighten up, too.

    Good luck :)

sideshow bob...I loved that stage in my dreadie growth. :) And you will ALWAYS have frizzies. Sorry. It's part of the package.

Try aloe vera. Just smooth a tiny tiny bit over the frizzies.

hello, basically, my girlfriend helped me do my whole head. It was really poofy, it has loads and loads of volume, which isn't great but isn't a problem. Basically after having slept on them for two nights they started to fall out. My girlfriend is going to re backcomb them now but is therew anything we can do to make sure they don't fall out again? Also how do u deal with the ends of them? mine have like whispy hairs at the very end where you can't backcomb them into the dread. Any advice for ends? I would post a pic today but i dnt have my camera and the internet is messed up at my house. I will soon though i promise.

re-backcomb them then just leave them dude. the ends are fine and if your dreads come out just leave them.....after a while depending on your hair type they will dread themselves. you gotta leave your hair to dread naturally. i backcombed mine to start with and i just re-backcombed them like 5 times over the space of like 3 months then left them. just make sure you stay away from wax and rubber bands (wax glues hair and doesnt allow it to dread and bands melt into your dread and stop it dreading also)

yeah, there was a big chunk of my hair in the back that refused to dread, even when I backcombed. So I left it, and for the longest time it was just silky straight hair. After a few months I decided to feel around my head, and discovered that it was no longer straight, but a huge fatty dread. :) It's now my favorite one...

So let your hair do it's thing. You get better dreads that way.
