I have recently planted some seeds in a pot outside my house. For obvious reasons, I don't want the plants growing to a huge size. So I'm going to let them grow till they're medium/smallish then cut their light scource. Would putting them in shade be sufficent? Or do they need complete and total darkness?

Learn and try topping the plants at the rite stage... That should help.

They wont need total darkness (pitch black), but they will need "fullmoon night time" type darkness. I'm affraid "shade" wont do.

No, marijuana plants won't grow properly in the shade. They enjoy moonlight and morning light... Also, make sure the roots aren't exposed as some plants are really sensative about that stuff... Good luck!

colimon.. that is some of the most unjustified pieces of advice i have witnessed... no offense intended...
so.. to answer his question.. your plants won't need full darkness but just adding a shade over the plants won't put them in flowering...
and anyway.. plants tend to stretch during flowering if they are too small...
