OK, I can't remember where I saw it, and if it's still around, please move this to it. But I was reading another topic a while ago and you got on to the question of are there any films or TV shows where being gay isn't the central theme. So I was thinking about it for ages and came up with a couple and thought other people could put ones that they can thinkof and so on. So far I got the Simpsons - Mr. Smithers and "The Third Man" With Orson Welles in it. There's an implicit reference between the doctor and one of the witnesses, I can't remember his name... Any one else think of any?
Isn't there a new movie with Robin Williams in it in which he has to play a gay pedophile or something? Also, Six Feet Under has a gay character in it. Interesting what you say though - homosexuality in movies is so often made to be a central theme when it really doesn't have to be so, of course, unless the movie is about being gay
Pax I've edited the title on this thread because it is too vague I believe to get people to check it who are interested in the topic, if you would like it changed again, pm me and let me know S
There is a French-Canadian film called C.R.A.Z.Y. in which the main character is gay. The story itself revolves more around his relationship with his family (his father in particular) and being gay is only one aspect of the story. It is a great film if you can find the DVD. Just be sure and find the DVD with English subtitles and make sure it says that one the DVD case. I believe there is one DVD that is only in French and then they released another later on with English subtitles.
Reno 911 Rescue Me thass all the tv I can think of I could think of tons of movies though, just don't wanna ruin it for the rest of you
Ab Fab --Damon, Serge Turtle, Justin and his partner. Melrose Place (the guy that plays terri's husband on Desperate Housewives) Dirt--quite a few.. The riches--cross dressing kid Desperate Housewives--Andrew and a few others. Deep Space 9--sorta, but not really, Dax, Kira in some episodes. Queer as folk has mostly straight people playing gay characters...weird.
Little Miss Sunshine - Steve Carell's character is gay, but it's not really that important to the movie.
I was thinking this thread the other day and thought of another movie. Billy Elliot. The movie is brilliant and despite being rated R, I think it should be shown to people of all ages. The message it perpetuates is a powerful one and important yet simple. Be yourself, follow your aspirations and define your life by what makes you happy and not how other's would like you to be. I don't want to give too much away but the story basically involves a young boy who is pressured into doing something he doesn't really like doing by his father. There is something he wants to do but he knows his father and others close to him may think it is unacceptable. The whole story is applicable to being gay and hiding it and eventually coming out and exploring the reactions of friends and family. Anyway, back to the point of the topic. One of Billy's (the main character) friends is gay. There is a bit of awkwardness in their friendship but eventually Billy is accepting. There is a wonderful scene at the end of the movie where Billy's gay friend is sitting with another boy whom is presumably his boyfriend. Billy's friend being gay isn't the point of the film but there are aspects that tie into the main plot. I highly encourage everyone to check it out. I don't know how it managed to get an R rating.
Capote. I think they did the gay thing very tastefully in that movie. and Billy Elliot got an R rating because of the language, I believe. 28 Days (with Sandra Bullock.)
Iron-Jawed Angels hints at bisexuality, main theme is feminism Boys Don't Cry has a gay character you see like twice, main theme is transgender issues.
Not sure if it's been mentioned, but Saved! where the main character's boyfriend turned out to be gay, and then got sent to a Christian rehab center thingy. Fucking love that movie.
I dont watch this show but i saw in the previews of Desperate Housewives, that red headed lady's son was gay, it was an issue for a few episodes but it aint no more.
