then why o' why did you accuse bella of undermining the gravity of the situation? i've a best friend who worked for the dumb friends league, i've never had a "bought" pet, i believe in getting pets at the pound, fixing them, caring for them, and i think it's pretty much a garauntee no one will ever receive a gift of a pet from me. but bella didn't undermine the gravity of the situation, she pointed out it's flaw that will undermine it all on it's own, that being, there's a lot of people who DO WANT AND DO ADORE their " surprise gift" pets.

edit: meant to have "surprise" in there.

i have dogs from a rescue now, my dogs before these were rescues. I know i want to have kids soon and know i want a dog that is good with them and good in the house, much like my grandpa wanted me to have a purebred at 10 because we knew what we were getting. if i didn't want to have kids and had a house and yard the size of my moms i would get a million dogs from the pound, but unfortunatley a dog from the pound doesn't fit well with young kids or not a huge yard or dealing with seperation anxiety.

    ps-I love labordoodles.

Contrary to what most of you think there are many pedigree dogs in shelters and rescues. You might end up with a better dog that way then buying from a pet shop that deals with backyard breeders and pet millers. Rescues and shelters vet all their animals before putting them up for adoption, pet shops rarely go to the trouble or expense.

i have two very nice pure breeds we got from a rescue. one is pedigreed and papered and the other is not tracable. i have had mixes before too fromt he shelter and they were much smarter than any pure breds i have had. unfortunatley none of them would be good with babies or good with a smaller yard, which is what i would be looking for in my next dog.

How are you going to get rid of the problem?

Trap them and adopt them out? Euthanize them?

That's an entirely different discussion though... you keep branching off... first your argument is about anti-pet ownership...then you tone it down a notch, and retract your argument more or less and just explain why domestication was probably a bad idea in the first place, but you don't expect a ban...now you're onto spaying and neutering.

Well no shit Sherlock, you should spay and neuter if you do not plan to properly care for the offspring and/or find them good homes... any RESPONSIBLE pet owner knows this... MOST pet owners DON'T just let their animals run around mating and dump off the offspring...

Honestly, most of your argument only affects a minority of pet owners, that AREN'T responsible. Most people own pets because they want to, and because they love their animal friends, and so they take very good care of them, which includes spaying/neutering and/or properly approaching a breeding process...

You are not teaching anyone anything new really with your argument... because the idiots that are careless with their pets, are probably the same idiots that are careless and ignorant with their entire lives... there's no getting through to them.

It's time you accept that idiots are a part of the human species, get over it.

I admit I did not read each and every reply to this, but the initial one states that the quotes from PETA were read, digested and then poisoned the reader. PETA is a huge money maker...there existence is smoke and mirrors....ask a PETA person the number (in tens of thousands) of animals they themselves put to death in the past year...healthy, adoptable animals...not sick, injured or unable to be rehabilitated. Thats besides the point, because anyone who even entertains those whack jobs is generally unreachable.

We forget that domesticated animals of the present day were bred over hundreds of years to be companions to humans....the modern dog, cat, horse, etc. have all been finely bred over the years to serve a purpose....we are not talking about taking a wild animal and forcing it to live in an apartment....that is wrong, we are talking about animals that were bred to coexist with humans....and my dog hunts kitchen scraps and my cats hunt spiders and when there are coyotes about my horses still get all full of fight or flight.....there natural instincts remain, but its the reason we dont ride zebras, keep tigers in our homes or try to snuggle up with a kodiak bear....those animals were not able to be domesticated....were as the dog, cat, horse, etc had the traits needed to be able to coexist.

As far as allowing a dog or cat to hunt.....yes, our barn cats hunt but luckily are smart enough to stay around the barn instead of roaming in the road and being run down and killed.....but I'd rather my dog not go outside and be allow'd to kill and eat (or just eat things that are already dead) and have her possibly die from bad meat or choking on bones!

As long as you allow animals to live in a setting where they are comfortable, keep in mind there natural instincts, and provide them with the things that keep them happy and healthy THERE IS NO REASON why responsible, kind hearted humans should not be able to enjoy the love and affection of a pet (or a whole farms worth like me)

This thread started with someone saying that domesticated pet ownership should be illegal....Well guess what there are better things to legislate, go do it.

I think it's more important to enforce antitrust laws, but ask ATT, and other companies how they feel about that?

Instead of arguing against it...people will be more open to you suggesting living side by side with your animals instead of ownership. I find people respond better to things if its not approached with instant arguing.

Man and dog have been partner for some 14,000 Years now. Since the Ice Age.
6,000 years prior to any other domesticated animal.

It was this partnership that wiped out populations of Giant Ground Sloth, Mastodon, Momouth, Cave Bear, Wooly Rhinosorus and others.

The most exceptional symbiotic relationship in the history of nature.

Now a days, Fido seems to have a lot less responsibility but the bonds of love and companionship are stronger than ever before.

What an evolutionary choice for a dog? To throw in your lot with a
dominant partner who has only his interest in mind, not yours. Precarious.

Yet compare the relative success of Dog to the Wolf, its The Wolf who is endangered while dog populations are huge.
