Two years ago I was barefooting all the time, then i had a really bad experience at a food court that really turned me off. Not at first, but a few days later I kind of stopped. So I'm starting to get back into it. I love driving barefoot, hiking, hanging around, and of course all the "normal" stuff: beach boat, etc etc. So today I had my first REALLY long walk on pavement and rocks in a LONG time. My feet did pretty good actually I only have one small blister, and it's not too bad at all. I walked for like 2.5 miles. I'm looking forward to more barefoot walking around. Though I have to say, walking in the forset/nature is SOOOO much nicer than pavement and rocks and stuff. Our world is definitely not made to let us get in touch with "reality" much.
yeah, grass is nicer, especially AFTER pavement... But pavement is nice once in a while in its own right. (these words coming from a complete newbie barefooter)
Welcome back! I'm glad to hear that you have overcome your bad experience. Fomented by shoddies, I'd imagine? Part of barefooting is experiencing EVERY environment from city streets to forest trails to grassy meadows to sandy beaches to loose gravel and coral rock and everything in between. Our feet have evolved over millions of years to become the perfect tool for traversing these environments. Touching them is touching reality. Long term barefooting conditions our feet to experience them without injury. Take the time to toughen up before attempting further long walks. In the course of experiencing this multitude of environments, we also experience other's reactions, be they surprise, camaraderie, disdain, or outright revulsion. The way in which we respond to their reactions is a measure of our fortitude, creativity and presence of mind. Keep the reasons for why we are barefooters in the forefront of your consciousness at all times and you'll have the resources you need to respond appropriately in the future.
Thanks guys! I do enjoy experiencing all the different environments. But asphalt is a relatively new invention. I got the opportunity to walk cobbled streets and pavement, new and old and the woods the feeling you get from asphalt is so artificial, it's sad. Cobble is ok, it's like really old streets, I dig that. I'm suprised so many people make an issue out of barefooting, there's no difference between the ground I walk with feet and the ground I walk with shoes, the "dirt" factor is exactly the same. If not WORSE with shoes because stuff gets jammed in the little treads.
