    Hi there,

I'm in my early forties and have two tweens. I used to smoke nonstop from the time I was about 17 until I was around 27 or so. Then I started having kids and I figured it was time to grow up and quit.

Well.....time goes on and my arthritis started happening and one thing led to another and I smoked a joint for the first time in years and lemme tell ya all that achy pain just vanished into thin air. :hurray:

I have joint custody of my kids and for now have been only smoking when they're at their dad's every other weekend...which is killin me!!! I mean it would be sooo nice to just take a hit before bed so I could actually sleep you know????

So..............................now I feel like I'm back in high school hiding it from my parents!!!! :&

For those of you who are parents....what do you do? Do you hide it from them? My kids are soooo into the DARE program and would FREAK if they ever found out that I smoked weed!! But at the same time this is my house, you know? UGH!!!

How old are your kids? You should pull them out of that program A.S.A.P. Educate them with the truth. Tell them all about your use of cannabis for medical reasons.

It's not something they can be pulled out of firstly and secondly I kind of like it....I just think they go a wee bit over the edge with it though. They're 10 and 11. I just think they're too young to know about it though. Just kinda ironic I spend the first twenty some odd years of my life hiding it from my parents and now I'm at the other spectrum. lol

They force them to take part in this? You like your kids to be lied to and blindsided?

Sit them down and say, "I smoke pot, and it's not a bad thing." I wish my mom had coem clean, because then I wouldn;t have had to gone thru the trouble of hiding my use. Tell them you don't want them to do it until they're older, and they need to tell you if they want to.

I think it's easier in CA because of med MJ and the general acceptance of herb.
My kids know I'm anti-drug for the family but realistic about what other people do....and they know about medical marijuana (and that people abuse the crud out of that system), but I figure if I educate them early as to the medicinal and non medicinal issues they may someday understand although probably not entirely approve of my pot use if my glaucoma gets bad enough to go that route.

In other words I think your kids need to be educated about both the risks and the benefits, and have a chance for it to soak into their minds and adjust before you go admitting that mom's puffing.

No, I don't think telling them you smoke pot is the answer. Then all it takes is for one of them to mention it to their dad, their dad tells the courts, and you lose your joint custody. Relief isn't worth that. Put your kids to bed, then go into your room, open your window, and take a few hits. I'm sure you remember all the tricks of the trade from your younger years. Haha, although the irony is cracking me up.

Hahah, my parents are divorced, and today they got in a huge fight over the phone, and since my mom and I are tight, she called me to talk about it (I'm just 18) and while she was venting to me, she told me I should "Make my dad some marijuana brownies, coz he needs them really badly." LOL, that is because all he ever does is yell and freak out on people. I thought it was so funny though. I think if I ever asked her to toke with me that she'd say yes. I am so tempted to ask her, too. :]

If they are 10 and 11 they arent ganna recongnize the smell like your parent would have when you were young. As long as they are asleep and wont walk in on you then your fine. If you are really worried about the smell then get a vapeorizor. If they walk in on you using it just tell them its an air purifior or somthing. They are 10 and 11. They have no idea how to tell if someone is high.

I smoke weed all the time at home now, and my little sister hates it. My mom and dad both smoke weed too, which she didnt know. I accidentally let it slip that my dad smoked weeed once and she went and asked my mom and my mom told her that she did too and my sister is like devastated. I have tried many times educating her about it. But she now thinks she has a family of drug addicts, which is so untrue. She has a home of lovely happy stoners.:)

HAHAHA man i just got the funniest image in my head.

You (the dad) are in the basement with a bong blairing some Pink Floyd, and your KIDS are upstairs wondering what's goin' on down there. HAHAHA. The whole dynamic has shifted.

On the serious side though, if i were you i'd do what any 15-18 year old kid does, sneak the shit. Wait till your kids are in bed/ in a shower/ whatever and toke. Kinda sucks how this dynamic has shifted on you. This would REALLY make for a funny skit on a comedy show though man. Just picture a dad downstairs with some burnout buddies wearing their Dark Side shirts and passing a bong, and the kid walks down and they all rush to hide the shit and all. The dad's like "I NEED MY PERSONAL SPACE, MAN!". And the kid: "We trusted you! And you're smoking WEED in this house? You've discraced this house and everything we stand for!" Haha. Sorry to joke....for real though, just sneak the shit man.

Have a completely truthful talk with them about marijuana as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Be sure to make a distinction between "wrong" and "illegal". Let them understand that while you believe there's a proper way of using it there's also a way of misusing it. I very much suspect most kids would appreciate a parent respecting their integrity enough not to fill their head full of bullshit.

Thanks for all the advice guys....even though only two of you are actually parents. lol

I think I'll just leave it be for now and keep on waiting until they're asleep. The using it isn't really the problem so much as the growing it. I mean I have a HUGE basement that is empty and I could really crank it out but I even have to go all stealth like the high school kids here do. lol. Too funny.

I'm just not ready to have that discussion with them yet I guess. I moreso just wanted to see what everyone else does here. I just had the facts of life talk and lemme tell ya I needed a good bowl to get over THAT one so this talk is gonna have to wait. :) Plus....irony on top of irony I know they'd tell my parents if they knew!!! hahaha. My kids would rat me out to my 77 yr old parents!!

And I like the DARE program because my kids are a LOT less apt to drive drunk or get addicted to cigarettes. I mean when I was in high school we smoked hash in the bathroom and I was smoking a pack of Marlboros a day along with drinking and driving like it was no big thing. My kids so much as smell smoke and they freak out and they totally don't want anything to do with booze. Yes they are still young and give them time but still I was already doing stuff at their age so if it's delayed it even this much I think the program is ok. I'll set them straight about pot in due time but I'm grateful they don't want to get into anything at all for now other than a double chocolate chip frappacino from starbucks. :)

It's not as much about assuming a parent role as it is approaching an individual with the same respect you'd expect from them. Younger folks will invariably make up their own mind and you want to bear in mind that how you handle such matters may well make a difference whether or not your kids will be willing to confide in you when something serious comes up. Being too rigid about these things might well ensure that some kids will cut their parents out of the loop- well, more so than normal.

I have a feeling you're a damned good parent anyway and probably don't really need any advice here. Good luck and peace.
