total longshot, because little (if any) research has been done on the subject: does anyone here know about interactions between lsd and atypical antipsychotics like abilify (aripriprozol)? these drugs are now being used in place of mood stabilizers for many manic depressives, but are relatively new (like last 20 years, which is at least 20 years after heavy lsd research). i know regular mood stabilizers like depakote (which regulates GABA) have known drug interactions, often inhibitory, and ive noticed my tolerance go up recently, which coincides with my beginning an abilify regimen.

personally i dont think that anyone who needs to take doctor prescribed drugs for any sort of mental illness should be taking lsd.

get off the drugs before you even consider taking lsd. too dangerous, even if there are no drug interactions, just the fact that you are depressed or whatever could be what messes you up.

you should take psychedelic drugs when you are in a GOOD head space. most people dont take the drugs you are referring to if they are in a good head space.

That disorder may intensify greatly from LSD, it's not reccomended. It also wouldn't be wise to be on the drugs at the time or anywhere near the time because it may influence your trip in an unwanted way. I'm not trying to sound mean or anything, it's just that it can really alter or intensify disorders, especially one like bi polar. I have depression, ADHD, tourettes (i don't know if this is an accurate diagnosis because i don't have any noticeable ticks or random swearing) and anxiety. I haven't yet been effected by magic mushrooms, Salvia Divinorum or LSD. I'm not saying this means all people with disorders should do it. My advice would be to steer clear from most hallucinogens while on those drugs for bi polar.

    Good Luck,
    Colin

I dropped acid for the first time two or three months after I stopped taking abilify and didn't go insane or anything, but I gave Abilify up pretty quickly (maybe a few days) and only took a low dose of LSD. I was on Zyprexa for maybe a week after the Abilify and quit taking antipsychotics altogether after being discharged from the loony bin. Afterwards, I would get a sinking, deathlike feeling any time I smoked marijuana; this lasted for about a month.

bipolar disorder is not a mental disorder. it is a mood disorder. some of the prolific great trippers of all time were manic depressive, and id rather be stable (medicated) and trip then manic or depressed.

I am diagnosed and take depakote and klonopin. I feel that I have much better/ in control hallucinogenic experiences when I am taking my medication and feel metally stable. I usually take the klonopin to go to sleep...not during the trip.
I dont know about abilify though

most likely the lsd will override whatever drugs you are on for your mood. in other words it would be like you were no longer taking your meds and the problem is magnified.

obviously 3xi knows nothing about brain chemistry. the health class rhetoric is so apparent in its stupidity and ignorance. im bipolar. im medicated. i also trip all the time and im a grad student working on my phd in cognitive psychology. i started this thread for specifics, thats why i said it was a long shot. i didnt start this thread to hear some ignoramus let me know what the local d.a.r.e. cop thinks. do me a favor, go down to your local library and get a book on basic brain function and get back to us.

bipolar has a psychotic element to it, i thought.

i wouldnt trip. but truelly maybe there is no such thing as bipolar, in which case i would trip. but its up to you to think what you do or do not have, not someone else.
its easy for everything to think they have lots of shit, but probably dont.

i don't know about antipsychotics, but i am prescribed amitriptalin for depression and temazepan for sleeping issues. I have done acid a lot of times now and iv never had a bad reaction or anything. Slightly different though i guess

bipolar disorder itself does not intrinsically come with psychosis, however some manic depressives have psychotic moments. the bipolar itself though, strictly mood.

it is too bad that you feel you must label yourself with some sort of identifiable illness.

no doubt your schooling has a lot to do with your outlook.

if my view is ignorant - so be it. - at least i dont have to medicate myself to be 'normal'!

if you trip on psychedelics like you say you do then you probably dont need to medicate yourself. just go with it - let yourself be who you are 'naturally'! - without the meds.

i realize you probably will not hear me - and there are probably many people with your type of education who would love to have me medicated...lol.

Well my friend I think you sound more wise than ignorant. Not to mention we are all ignorant of more than we know a la socrates, and this guy is probably forgetting that its not necessarily normal or common to spend years reading psychology and pharmacology text.

With this situation I can see both sides clearly, as a psychologist I understand the extent of psychopathology. But I also think most of it is socially precipitated - by socially I mean society. And I also think that weed, healthy lifestyle, and other natural measures can be just as effective as psych meds and with less side effects.

In my opinion the diagnostic criteria used by psychologists and psychiatrists is generally vague and open-ended. Most diagnoses are for classification reasons, i.e. insurance and drug companies. Personally, I don't want to be put in a box.

Yeah unbridled mania can produce acute psychosis in some people, but the disorder itself is not a thought disorder or psychotic in nature.

I also agree that some of the most prolific figures in history had difficulties with mood, and I'm sure a lot of them tripped balls. I would say its pretty important if you are able to deregulate strong emotions youve experienced, because the trip could possibly precipitate strong emotion.

Whats the action of abilify? Depakote probably inhibited the psychedelic experience similar to benzos which also act on GABA neurotransmitters. I've heard about SSRI's inhibiting trips, but nothing about atypical antipsychotics I guess since they are less commonly used.

lsd will turn someone with mental conditions into a killer or maniac. Basicly you really shouldn't take lsd if you have mental problems cause they will become worst, no fun.

If you do take lsd let us know how it went. =)
