Hello! I was resonantly told that Bald Eagles can live up to 60 years but only if they can survive a regeneration process they go through after their first 30 years of life. What happens is – when a Bald Eagle reaches 30 it will start to bang its beak on rocks until it’s beak falls off - after 21 days it grows another beak. With it’s new beak it will start to pull/ripe out its claws until it has pulled then all out. The eagle also pulls out some or all of its feathers. When I was told about this regeneration thing – it was during the Bald Eagles mating season - it was interesting to think that there might be an eagle up there – a little older then 30 but as good as new because it was strong enough to survive a regeneration process. Yesterday when I saw an old eagle fly over it was also interesting to think that he might be getting ready for this regeneration process. Cheers!
Bald Eagles are so beau-ti-ful. I acutally just googled bald eagle life span, and the average age I got was 15-30 years in the wild and longer in captivity, though. Also, female Bald Eagles are generally about 25% larger than males. I'm no bird master, but it seems that a lot of birds, from small domestic birds to larger wild birds, seem to have quite long life spans. Interesting.
Bald eagles live 20-30 years in the wild - and can live to about 50 in captivity. They do moult annually - like any bird, but they don't lose their beaks. They wouldn't be able to eat! We have bald eagles & golden eagles around here - and both at our local zoos & raptor centers. What I CAN tell you about their mating-season is that it usually lasts about 3 months, and is in the fall or winter depending on where you live. Eagles mate for life, and unlike several birds they DON'T mate on-the-wing but rather on the ground or in a low branch! love, mom
I read the other day that bald eagles were going to be taken off the endangered list and placed in the "protected" group....this is a great thing! The captive breeding / wild release programs have been working!!
