so, my hair is really oily and greasy. without my dreads, i had to shower every day, sometimes twice a day if i played with my hair a lot. i'm concerned about not washing my dreads a lot when they are in the early stages, because i think it's going to get smelly and maybe to greasy to dread properly. i also have non-dreaded bangs in the front and those definitely need to be washed daily, non-negotiable. do any of you dreadheads have advice as to how often i should wash my baby dreads? will washing them every other day impede their progress in dreading? thanks for your help in advance.
It's because you showered every day that your hair was oily and greasy. Start washing it less often. At first it will be oily and greasy because it was used to being washed so much, but it will eventually adjust. What kind of shampoo are you using? My hair used to be the same as yours. Now I can go a week or two before I wash it. The front part of my hair is also undreaded and usually washing it with just water is enough.
i am using the dr. bonner's liquid soap, which i didn't know needed to be diluted at first but i do now and will be diluting it. i never thought that washing it every day would cause it to be greasy but it makes sense! i just don't want it to get too greasy to dread properly. they're looking pretty good for the first few days, though, so i suppose i shouldn't worry too much and just let them be. thanks for the advice! you folks are very kind at helping me through my first journey.
Good natural head grease is fine for dreading. Don't wait until your head is flaming and crawling with itches, but don't wash every day either. I usually go four or five days or more between hair washes, my scalp has adjusted, and the hairs are dreading fine, even with a bit of grease. It's the residue left from soaps and spray that prevent dreading. Just make sure to really get the Bronner stuff out, it takes some work. You'll be fine Enjoy!
