at my school, we have to have 60 hours of community service in order to graduate. i think this is bullshit, since other schools dont have to. I didnt think a school could make us do this kinda stuff, especially outta school, on our own time. is this right?
If it is wiping old ladies bums then sure that can't be right. If it is spread over a few months and it teaches you something - as Americans say ''Suck it up''. We had a volutary scheme not mandatory scheme - I liked it. Seems a bit petty to protest this - what are you supposed to be doing ?.
do it first(to avoid being called lazy) then ask the administration and then petetion or whatever you think needs to be done.
Ask if you can do something that conforms with the obligations to graduate but also conforms to something you find interesting.
I do see a problem with it.... The fact that your school has stricter graduation requirements then others is not fair to the students. You (students at your school) are being forced to do work in order to graduate and others (students at other schools) are not. You being singled out because of where they sent you to school. You can't easily change schools (I know where live they charge you fees and give you a hard time). However a protest will not work. Unless you can get the entire class to join in then you will not win, and even if you can get the entire class to support you, will the school listen? If you think there is something wrong with it, then go public with you issues. Contact the press. School admins hate to have their bullshit ways under public scrutiny.
60 hours is like a week and a half in your parents work world scheme of things, why should it be outlandish to ask you to commit that much of your life to your community in order to graduate? You will probably never find anything that meets your interests. It's time you bellied up to the bar. Time to stop looking at what others get away without doing and look at what your own responsibility is. Will it kill you?, will you possibly gain new insight into other people and their mode of living? If that's true do it, you'll never regret it.
Find something fun. I fulfilled some requirements by playing in a community orchestra. You can also volunteer for a nifty liberal organization, volunteer at a shelter, or spend some time at a senior citizen residence. Be creative. On a side note, there aren't many things that the public school systems are doing right, but this is one of the few. Kids need to get involved at an early age, and unfortunately most are lazy and need someone to force them to do so. If you pick something that you actually enjoy, you'll probably stick with it long after the requirements are fulfilled and make a big difference. I hope it goes well for you. PB
Community involvement is something all young people need to do. You all love to hit the forums to ask what jobs pay the best, so you can pick your colleges and career trends, but guess what there's more to life than your ultimate paycheck. Do your community service, since most parents work at jobs and kids no longer do any chores. Learn how the rest of the world lives. Six weeks is small change.
Your parents agreed with the school board to these requirements. Or they wouldn't have been passed. Perhaps a dialoque with your parents is in order.
in my old high school we had to do 40 hrs of community service.... i just faked it. but then ended up getting my GED. i reccomend either. faking it, or getting your GED.
Wait, so let me get this straight. You have to work 60 hours for the community you live in. In this community, you are provided with roads, education, parks, running water, and plenty of other amenities for which you pay absolutely no local taxes. And you think because other kids do not have to work 60 hours of community service, you think it's wrong. Work won't kill you, but laziness might.
its not that bad. Just dont do anything, do a crappy job, or do the job COMPLETELY wrong and say you didnt know.
Do the work and stop being so selfish. Help someone else for a change. what is it with this me first attitude that is so prevalent in the teens growing up?
gee, the music venue I work at part time has GREAT need of volunteers, especially young folks who can make it past 10 pm. I asked the school district that I cover in my full time job, and they said for their district, it did not matter where the hours were earned (because the venue is in Denver County). you can't find a theater to usher in, an animal shelter to walk dogs, a place to get real world experience for your resume?
