It seems Christians would like to muzzle prayers from other religions in America. A hindu was interrupted several times while saying a prayer (in English) in the US senate by Christians who didn't want him to express himself. So much for FREE SPEECH. So much for Christian tolerance. http://www.breitbart.tv/html/2957.html
That was damned disrespectful. If there is any justice, those three fine Christian folk will be given a fair trial and then hanged at dawn Saturday morning. But more than likely they'll pay a small fine and get a few hours of community service. You know, just like Scooter Libby. Glory be to Lord Bush.
Thats also not an example of free speech. Annoying for sure, as I find extremists of any religion that I know much about
Were these the same dudes who objected because the Muslim Congressman wanted to take his oath of office on the Qur'an? (if he took it on the Bible, would he even be bound by it?)
A big disgusting dump on the Constitution in the highest chamber of U.S. government...doesn't surprise me, though. They sounded insane.
Uh, my understanding is most of the founders of the USA were actually freemasons who may have been raised Christians, but didn't practice it as adults so much, except perhaps for show. Unfortunately everyone in the US has been influenced by the Christian culture in which they are immersed, no matter what their religion.
I agree. Though I havent read the story so maybe I shouldnt be agreeing? Still it's quite rediculous, no matter where you are to attempt to silence anyone when they are not directly insulting you, or anyone, for that matter.
Skip is right. The "Christian nation" myth is propaganda manufactured by a well-funded industry designed to make the United States a Christian theocracy. Our Constitution makes clear that :"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." And by the way, Christians can and do pray in schools.
On second thought, maybe they were right not to let the Hindu pray. If they let him pray, they'd have to let the Christians and others pray, and (politicians being what they are) Congress would turn into a big prayer meeting, and God might just puke on the Capitol Building.
People should be outraged that there is any kind of religious nonsense going on in their senate meetings at taxpayers expense. What ever happened to separation of church and state!? This is why there will never be peace on this fucking planet. Prayer and God babble should have noting to do with running a country, in fact it should be made law that no politicians ever utter those words and society might actually head off in the right direction for a change.
That is such a lie Pat Robertson specifically said that christians ruled this nation. And if you say Pat is wrong I am afraid your a blasphemer
If Pat Robertson said that Friday the 13th came in July in 2007 I wouldn't believe it unless I checked it out in at least three independent sources, and then I'd suspect they were run by the 700 Club.
By your reasoning, no one save Christians should have the right to publicly protest expressions of faith made by those of another "religion". They tried not to let the Hindu pray, and as a just result got booted and charged with a crime...as should happen to Hindus who might engage in identical behavior toward a Christian in the same situation. Of course, you and other "evangelicals" will glorify the troublemakers as martyrs.
As an outsider looking into America, I think the founding fathers were very wise to guarantee freedom of religion. This deplorable behaviour from people who are at the top of society seems to indicate that this fundamental principle is under threat from the right wing christians. GWB says he went into Iraq to spread 'freedom' - perhaps he, and like minded persons, should look again at what 'freedom' means. I hope the US doesn't go down the road of intolerance to diverse cultures - it's supposed to be liberal country based on freedom isn't it? Not allowing that Hindu much freedom though.... I'm sure many millions of Americans would find this unacceptable.
I hope everybody checked out the story on this on the Hindu section. The Hindu did pray, at the behest of the Majority Leader of the Senate.
thats VERY disrespectful. If those men had any moral and belief in God they would have shut up and would have been tolerant towards that man. Poor thing. I feel for him and anyone else from any religion who gets interrupted practicing what they believe. They should be ashamed of themselves. And for those who see Christianity as a terrible belief...im sorry you feel that way. There are many, and im included in that many, who tolerate others' beliefs and ways of life. Jesus didnt say to HATE anyone...he had tolerance, as do i. God bless that hindu man and i hope those men who interupted him apologize to their BROTHER. ( Because we are all one in the eyes of the beholder )
