ok tell us who u think is the best bassist

i think matt freeman from rancid, or flea from rhcp

 

flea for difficult bass lines but i would have to say mark hoppus for the "catchiest" bass lines

 

I like Paul McCartney's style of melody bass....it's not just a beat, its acctually a element of the music

 

Does that include dead bassists? If it does, then Jaco Pastorios.
If not, then Stanley Clarke.

 

I would have to say Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Les Claypool, Allen Woody, George Porter Jr. That's my top five

 

Stanley Clarke I recently saw at the mann music center and he was amazing.

Victor Wooten would undoubtedly get the award for flashiest bass playing. he is great because he makes people realize bass is NOT easy as the ignorant public loves to think. However, I marcus miller is brilliant and charles mingus is a demon on the stand up. Phil Lesh from the dead would get my award for the spaciest bass. He knows how to take the bass lines out into the cosmos and still keep the song together.

 

well... i REAALY like Jonh Myung's (Dream Theater) style... great bass and great feeling... and anyone ever hard of CAMEL? Well... I do love their bassist...

awwww... John Paul Jones and the OX (John Entwistle) were not mentioned yet! Bassists never get enough credit...

 

Hard to judge. JPJ was in it for the music unlike some bassist who were in it for the sex and drugs. It's hard to judge the best though. Let's go by song instead. Put on Hurricane - Bob Dylan and turn it up really loud. The base line in that is so goofy. But my favorite, or one of my favorites that I can think of right now, would be I'm A Man - Chicago. Chicago is one my favorite bands. More so than Led Zeppelin. In fact I don't like anyone better but I like The Doors and Steppenwolf and some other bands about the same ammount.

But really, listen to the bassist in I'm A Man. If you don't have it, IM me (after 3:30 pm central time on weekdays because I have school) and I'll send it to you.

Phil Lesh - no one better combines holding down the rythm and playing melody at the same time. As stated in a number of sources:

"Phil is the most creative and inventive bass player in the history of rock and roll"


I share that opinion.

 

I'd say Les Claypool and Victor Wooten.
