http://leicesteruk.************/album.php?aid=33557&l=5e549&id=223804037 Hello everyone! Well, I've wanted dreads for years and decided to get them done at a salon to make sure they don't get screwed up. Well, it I think they are... Here's the method the hairdresser used: First she backcombed, but not very "tightly" or very much. Then she heated wax..(oh no!) Put a dab of wax all over the backcombed hair, and twisted it into a dread. After that, she used a straightener to heat the wax into my hair further and straighten out my dread. After each dread was done, she took my dread and looped it to make a knot at the roots.. This was done 4 days ago and I'm wondering what to do....? After much reading through these threads I've realised many of you think wax is evil. Although my dreads don't look bad I'm sure they will fall apart soon.. I've noticed many of the "dreads" are more like knots with some straight hair twisted around them... with little evidence of "complete" backcombing. Should I wash out the wax and re-backcomb and re-dread my whole head or just leave them for a few months and see what happens? I'm thoroughly p**** off cos I spent alot of money and 5 hrs getting my dreads and they don't seem like real dreads to me... I've been trying to remedy all this by backcombing the tips which are "wisps" of hair rather than dreaded..is that alright or should I just backcomb from the roots...? Any help/suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated, I really hope I can save my hair before it gets even more messed up~~!
oh oops I forgot to mention that I'm Eurasion therefore my hair is more Asian and very straight= more difficult to backcomb/knot/stay knotted..
oh gee...well first when you talk about the looping, did she take the top of the dread and run it through its roots? if im right then try and undo it as soon as possible. I did that in november on a few of my dreads, now those roots are knotting up like that and they are about 1/3 the width of the rest of the dread and it looks awful, but they will never look better unless i ocmbine them with others. and whatever you end up doing, i would consider leaving the 'wisps' they look a lot more natural and usually better than rounded tips, but if you go for awhile and you dont like the wisps, there are very simple ways to round them on down the road. From what i can see in your pictures, i really like the ends how they are. on to wax, yes you should try to get the wax out as soon as possible, mine came out very easily. Some people recommend using very hot water, and soaking for quite awhile. If you are really desperate and have a lot of time, you could also probably comb them out at this stage and have someone backcomb them, which is good so you can get all the right widths and all of that/ You could also, if youre patient, go natural. hrrrmmm...judging by your hair type wear a wool hat as much as you can, it helps a lot. and finally, as all of these questions run through your head, the best cure to any problems (except rubberbands and wax) can be answered by time. we;; i hope some of that helped even jsut a little bit, but im just going by past experience and hanging around here, you can probably get some better answer by almost anyone else but yeah, good luck!
Oh wow. That sounds terrible.. Sorry to hear it! Man would I be pissed too. But I agree with Knotdirty, I'd personally brush it all out and re do it myself (salons are pointless, they don't know what they're doing). As for the wisps, I believe they round themselves out over time if I'm not mistaken..?
quick question KnottyAdam - what's all this about a wool hat? I just started by second set of dreads about two weeks ago (going all natural this time) and I'm interested as to what my hat can do for me.
get every bit of wax out let it fall apart then it will start to dread the way its suposed to. if she tied knots at the roots u might wanna try unknotting them, but that might not matter too much, if anythig u want a knot at the tips so they will round, but almost all mine are whispy ended, but that might be from dragging on the ground..i dunno.. as for hair type, thats a myth, i know a few asian guys with long hair & if they didnt braid it b4 bed they woke up with 1-3 massive dreads.. asain hair dreads easily, your biggest mistake was in thinking u can buy dreads you may not need to comb it out & start over, but iu must get that crap out now, very hot water, hot as u can stand, hours of scrubhbing..you might have to repeat it for a few days..that crap isnt made to come out ez..& the method she used to get it in there makes it 10 times harder since she made it completely melt into every availible space..you got your work cut out for u.. and as for the wool hat, i think if i understand it right, it helps promote hair movement within the dreads, movements needed to cause knots
Even if you're just wearing the hat to bed it'll help. Try an acrylic or cotton hat if you're worried about heat...and just wear a wool one to bed or in the house. Any friction helps, I think. Wool just happens to work the best.
I don't think you'd have to take them all out. Most importantly I'd try to unflip the roots, I can find some pictures of what those will look like if they're left in, and it's not pretty.. although a few may look cool too many it would be obvious what happened. Then I'd get the wax out, and let them finish on their own. --flipped root--> http://www.weblogimages.com/v.p?uid=nicoblue&pid=364636&sid=rCY18kCJM0
Big bowl of hot hot water bicarb 3 drops of tea tree oil 9 drops of lemon juice 2 tspoons of salt soak in solution for 30mins then rinse like foooooooook in the shower. Will take a few goes at it, 7-8 maybe, once a month. but, you'll get there
