Okay, so I got my dreads done by a stylist today for $150, my hair is around 7 + inches long. She backcombed and then waxed them.

Basicly, I'm just a bit worried. They don't feel tight, and if I wanted to I could pull them apart. They're also sticking up alot.

I'm just wondering, should I worry or will they tighten and get more like dreadlocks any time soon. I just paid alot for this and want them to be good.

By the way, I'm new (Just arrived from everyonedoesit) so howdy.

    Here are some pics.

You can view them here: http://forum.everyonedoesit.co.uk/showthread.php?t=98968

    Please any advice is helpful.

    Thanks.

WAX is BAD. wash in the hottest water u can stand and scrub the wax out.

u made a mistake going to a stylist dude better to get a friend to do it but hey never mind about that. they will be very loose so you might need to back comb them every week for like 3 weeks. then leave them. they will loosen and fall out a bit then tighten up. u should wash them after like 3 weeks using either non-residue shampoo (dr bonners etc) or sea salt water wash etc.

and they will stick up for a while mine wer down to my shoulders when i got them done and they stuck out almost vertically for a few weeks lol.

main thing is wash that wax out it will stick them together but wont allow the hair to move freely therfore it will stop the dreading process. if you want them to look neat get aloe gel...although iv never used it i dnt mind my hair being a mess.

anyway good luck dude and keep posting on here for help etc. have a look round the forums all the info u need is ther.

I'm gonna keep using the dreadhead wax, it's worked wonders for alot of people. Other than that, I'm gonna backcomb any that need it I guess and just see what happens.

It wasn't a mistake with the stylist though, a friend tried last time and it didn't go well enough. She did a fine job I think.

You don't need to backcomb every week. Backcombed dreads fall out a bit anyway, re-backcombing over and over will make it worse if anything at all. Just do it once if you really feel you need to - after the wax is out - and let them be, wash once a week (depends on you) with residue free soap and let them do their thing.

Really, you shouldn't use wax. Candlesticks on your head may appear to be dreads but in reality that shit is just hindering the locking process and prolonging the time it takes.

they don't feel tight coz they're waxy and gloopy and crappy.

if you're asking for advice, listen to people who know what they're talking about.

    wax is bad.

if you want good dreads, wash it out. if you want shit dreads, leave it in.

    simple :)

it takes awhile to get good locks, not just over night-
if you get all that wax out and stop using it you will have
    wicked dreads...

yeah...if you want overnight dreads then you are in it for the wrong reasons, IMHO.
we aren't trying to be jerks, but wax is HORRIBLE for dreads. it makes them moldy and only makes them look like dreads. it hinders the knotting process by an insane amount...it just molds them together.
really, you should do research before deciding to wax any further.
    i'd melt that wax out.

i backcombed my own hair and didn't use any wax. they won't be perfect and some will fall out, but i've had mine for under two weeks and already the ones that fell out are knotting up on their own. they will come if you want them badly enough to be patient for them.

I've had mine for just over 3 weeks and they are falling apart. They also itch alot. They are a pain in the ass to wash, and in the morning I have to palm roll each dread to keep them from being flat. Mitten.......dude......Anything worth having is worth waiting for. Think about it, tangled hair is not going to magicly form into dreads overnight if you keep slaping tons of wax on them. I have strainds of hair right now that dont even look like dreds. Time and patience will form your dreads, They will get worse before they get better. The more you put stuff in your hair people here tell you NOT to, the you will lose your dreads. If in one year your dreads still look like shit and they are all falling apart even though you did everything they told you to do, THEN you can say they were wrong. Hang in there bro, its gonna take some time!:toetap:

if your going to ask for advice be open minded and listen to it. wax DOESNT work wonders. it just creates mould in your hair so stop using it.

I'd just like to add, that judging from those pics, the hair stylist did a shitty job. I'm not referring to using wax, yeah that's bad but since the hair stylist used wax they should look alot better at first.

But well, all I can imagine is that most of them will fall out after some washing. Not completely though and that's not a bad thing, it's normal with shitty backcombing results, it's like a jumping table for going neglect. If you stop using wax that is, and that's what you should do, glueing hair together is not dreading, you have to let them knot up. I'm just sorry that you paid 170$ for that bs.

That's what backcombed baby dreads will do at first, they unravel to some extent (not completely) and then begin to knot back up the way they want to in time. Dreadlocks are a huge test on your patience, the results however, are worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the advice.
I haven't waxed them in days and I think the wax is basicly gone. Actually, the only wax really put on them wax from Friday when they were put in.

I'm gonna leave them bare then for a while and see how it goes. Also, I know they're not gonna dread over night. I've been researching dreads for ages. Some of them are better than others to be honest. Some don't even feel dreaded but are keeping together. I'll stick it out, and I'm not gonna wash them for a while.

Someone with very good dreads told me to use liquid latex once, just ot shape them. I haven'd done it, but any feedback?

why on earth when one wants a natural hairstyle do ya feel ya need to put all sorts of fake shit in them to make them and maintain them,,, dreads are natural hair..... a natural process if ya dont mess with yer hair ..hmmmmmmm... maybe bubble gum would do a better job holdin them together....:D

i think everyone else pretty much covered it :)
my hair was about your lenght and i backcombed and they mostly fell out after their first bath, but now they are locking up nicely and looking better all the time. and i dont do ANYTHING to them except talking friends into ripping them apart every month or so lol.
your hair cant lock up with sticky shit like wax in it so it will take way longer for you have dreads.
dont be scared when you wash your hair and they fall out, you can rebackcomb them and do maintenence if you want but dont make a habit of rebackcombing, thats not good for them either. i think they look fine, just need a bit of palm rolling after you get that wax out.
youll want to listen to all the awesome, nice people here, they have so much good knowledge to offer :) good luck
