I've been looking at the body mass index as a source of height-weight proportion. Do you believe it's an accurate or good tool to use ? http://www.bariatricedge.com/dtcf/pages/bmi_calculator.htm?WT.srch=1
the BMI is good for measuring populations...but when you use it for an individual, it can be quite inaccurate because all you are using is the height/weight. not taking into account of LBM or bone density. when my doctor uses this measure, i don't listen to him...its really no concern of mine when the doc says my BMI reads overweight/obese
Not really. It says I'm normal but I have plenty of loose skin. It's an alright measurement if you're looking at averages, but it shouldn't be used much more than that. People with muscle generally are healthy, but according to that chart they would be overweight or fat.
I don't. To have a below 25 bmi I'd have to lose about 10 lbs of my muscle mass. I like the amount of fat I have on my body, and I'm healthy. But my bmi says I'm overweight.
bmi is ridiculous....my bmi says im overweight but my doctor says im healthy...so i should ask whats the point of bmi??..it seems like a waste of time to use it
It CAN be accurate, but often isn't. Like if you're in the mid to high range of overweight or are obese according to the chart, if you don't lift weights and you know that you don't have more muscle mass than fat on your body, then chances are that BMI is reasonably correct. But if you're an athlete, then it throws it all out the window. It also doesn't differentiate between women and men, which is ridiculous. Granted, I'm not considered overweight because of my boobs, but some people could be if they are particularly well endowed.
