what do people think of american ale , such as sierra nevada pale ale and beer from the anchor brewing co. and the alaskan brewing co. etc. ?? anyone tried this stuff? any recomendations? im from the uk and a supermarket, Safeways, stock a huge range off this stuff which is pretty handy. also has anyone tried any beers from countries in the far east and asia?
Sierra Nevada and Anchor both make good beers. They're also probably the two biggest, most well-known craft breweries in America. I've never had anything from the Alaskan Brewing Co. Beers from the Far East and Asia generally aren't that memorable. Most of the beers you will find coming from these countries are variations of simple European-style lager beers, with not much originality, complexity or taste to them. If you're looking for good beer, stick to German, Belgian, and English beers, as well as American craft brews.
I have to disagree with some of this. We dont see much Sierra Nevada and Anchor brews here in the pacific northwest. This is the microbrew capital of the world, and most bars and all stores have many micros in stock. I am a fan of ambers myself, the best being.. Fat Tire (colorado) Mirror Pond (Deshutes brewery Bend Oregon) Drop Top (Widmere brewery Portland Oregon) and if you ever get to try McMinimens http://www.mcmenamins.com brews, which I dont believe sell in bottles (only at the breweries) you will be drinking possibly the best in the world (in my opinion). Oh, and I have had a few of the Alaska brews and it is quite good.
Flying Dog all the way! I forget one of their pale ales.... I think it's Tire Bite? They make a really good India Pale Ale as well. Awesome artwork on their bottles too...
I like both Anchor Steam and Sierra Nevada, I agree that they are the most well known and the ones with the widest distribution. I also like some of the northwestern ones like Full Sail and Mirror Pond, which i'm sure doesn't get to the UK because it doesn't even reach the Eastern time zone in America, haven't had it since i left that region.
