I donated blood today. :D First time I've been able to do it...and I was the minimum age 2 years ago, so I'm really excited.

It just feels really good to have done that, and I thought I'd share it here. :) Especially since my family's gotten their share of transfusions. My dad's had two open heart surgeries, my brother had an accident that left him in a wheelchair, my aunt has cancer...well anyway, I think everybody knows somebody who's benefited from donated blood.

    So what about you guys?

I've tried to give 5 times, but I have low iron so I've only been able to give 3 times. I love giving blood and being able to help someone, somewhere. Good for you for giving :)

I have really bad veins so I can't. It generally turns into about an hour ordeal just to FIND a vein at a doctor's office using special needles, but blood donation centers often aren't equipped to deal with it. It really sucks- I wish I could... but every time I've tried they had to give up trying to get a vein and I ended up bruised across both elbows anyway.

Ah i really want to in the next few weeks but i'm worried they won't be able to find a good vein. The Hospital tried to take a blood sample from me last year and they were jabbing and poking all over me trying to find somewhere they could get blood from.

Another thing, why do you have to be 8 stone?

Never done it, but I plan to in the future. Next time my school has a parking lot blood drive I'll probably do it. Apparently it can be beneficial to the body to get rid of some blood once in a while.

Any smaller than that and it would be unhealthy for the person giving blood because that is underweight or borderline for most people.

Yeah, I had to gain weight to give blood. I'm well above the minimum now, though. ;)

An average person weightwise will get a little dizzy and feel kind of weak and sore all day from giving blood...imagine what it would do to somebody who's underweight.

My friend went with me to give blood, and it took them a good twenty minutes and three or four pokes in both arms before they could get her vein..I guess she has rolling veins or something?

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but then could it be easier for an overweight person to give blood?

I wouldn't think so. I think it's easiest for healthy people to give blood. And being overweight is unhealthy, just as being underweight is unhealthy.

Both overweight and underweight people have similar problems with blood pressure, blood sugar, circulation...ect.

And then there's people like me...I'm pretty healthy, but I got dizzy and queasy because I have a problem with seeing blood...and I have a little issue with the idea of a tube/needle being in my vein.

Oh, and if you're scared that you'll faint...they have people standing at the ready to give you sprite and cold towels. :) I almost passed out at the end when I saw them switching the tubes from the pouch to the little vials...but they did everything they could to make me feel better.

    Congrats to you!

I gave in 03 but they found a false positive for hepatitis C and apparently I can't give for awhile.
