Hi guys. I have a friend who lives in Indiana. And she has fruitflys real bad. Anyone have ideas on how to get rid of them? Thanks.
If they are indeed Fruit Flys, they only swarm around rotting fruit hich has a sugar base to them, Does she have fruit trees growing close to her house that have dropped fruit? Last year we had a problem in our house with those. A pear had fallen behind our microwave stand and was totally rotted. Those flys thought it was a buffet! Find their source and then spray as many as you can with flying insect killer, then clean up whatever was rotting. hanging a few fly strips will to catch a few to show an exterminator will help too.
Thank You. That was what I told them. Check around for Gardens, and Berry patches in the area. The pests are getting into their houses too. (Garbage cans can be a buffet also.) I'll relay the info.
I always have a problem in the summertime with them. They love red wine or any wine really...its just that I LOVE RED WINE so thats what I usually have around. I leave a bit in a paper cup on the counter over night, just to cover the bottom, and in the morning I sneak up on it and lay a paper insert from a magazine on top or a cover for a container and shake it so the ones hanging around on the sides will get all wet and can't fly, then I pour them down the drain and rinse. They come in on bananas and fruit from the store. We also get them right through our screens but those are the 'no see ums' but in the same family of pesky pests. I have also hung up strips and put a little grape jelly on there for added incentive.
Teepi, ONE of the people I mentioned IS in Ohio also. But, the Basics seem to work on getting rid of them. So, thats the info I passed along.
I hope they get rid of 'em. They are so pesky. We live in a super insulated house...so I can't spray anything unless its totally chemical free. Larry also painted motorcycles and cars for years and even though he wore all the face coverupppers, he still has a problem with his lungs and things in the air...smoke,perfume, house cleaning stuff, bug spray etc. So I only use vinegar, baking soda, castile soap, orange oil and salt to clean with. But the colder weather is coming and then those little pests will be gone, but soon the swarms of ladybugs will start here, the first year we were building they came by the thousands, "OH GREAT," I thought "LADY BUGS for my garden will be here in mass quantities for my garden in the spring". They drove us nuts!! They covered the outside walls of the house, they covered the inside of the windows, we were scooping them up with cups, throwing them back outside, coming back in the house and the window would be covered again. We had no ceiling in the bedroom yet and between the vapor barrier and the attic insulation you could see them crawling around. We had a lizard get in there and he would scoot across the plastic gobbling them up..... They haven't been as bad since, but that first year we had bright pink house wrap on the house and now its got the wood siding so they are not as attracted to it. teepi
I have a good fruitfly trap...I take red wine vinegar and pour it in a glass (this is just a kind of modified version of teepi's) and put plastic wrap across the top. Then I poke holes in the plastic big enough for the flies to enter, but they can't get back out! And they drown and die.
Thank you for the update on my plan!!! Teepi..off to get out the plastic wrap and to sacrifice a bit of the red.....
