Yes it says all that stuff about hell, but it also says that when you die you DIE no one goes to heaven or hell until the final judgement. Because... what would be the point of a final judgement if everyone was already in heaven or hell?

people are afraid of not existing, by and large. they take comfort in thinking that life is eternal, and even if they're going to be tortured until the end of time, they'll be alive (at least in some sense).

first of all, there are no 'beliefs' in science.
just theories.
secondly, science isn't an explanation for everything, more of a method of attaining understanding of everything.
and it gets more accurate all the time.

now, religion is all belief.
it claims to be an explanation for everything, yet is grossly lacking in most areas (jesus, as far as i know, never really talked much about quantum mechanics).
it never gets better, because it's already supposed to be perfect, which means that it never gets more accurate over time (unless you reinterpret it).

so, which is a better way of looking at the universe. one where you can increase our lot as humans, or one where we turn away from understanding?

 

I would argue that greater understanding comes from accepting that our knowledge is like a single pebble on an infinte rocky shore.

Science is fine, but look at history, every 150 or so years we come to find out that a lot of things we used to believe in science were false, it's constantly changing and evolving. Science is an explination, but it's not the ONLY one, and it's certainly not complete.

We don't even know what the universe "is" how is it that we can ever expect to explain how it works?

Could you tell me how a computer functioned before you knew what one was? Science is fine if kept in check with the greater mysteries of life which science will probably never be able to explain.

 

It also tells you to be racist, beat your child to death with stones, and you should forgive people because it's only okay for God to kill the entire world.

Oh, and don't forget how it single handedly convinced religious nuts to kill thousands of people for various reasons that made no sense.
