And I want to fly into a city (not southern California, preferably) and explore it and the surrounding areas before I get to Catalina Island... I was considering San Francisco, of course. What do you guys think? I'm going to either take the bus or train down to Long Beach on August 21st from where ever I am at...maybe make some pit stops along the way... Any suggestions on where to go?
Fly into Monterey http://www.montereyairport.com/ End your trip with a Green Tortoise trip to LA http://www.greentortoise.com/budget.adventure.travel.html you can ride from Santa Cruz, Monterey or even SF. I rode it once fromm SOCal to Eugene Oregon, nice trip. They got beds in the buses and know just where to stop for fun.
Santa Cruz is pretty loose when it comes to nude beaches, if you are into things like that. http://gocalifornia.about.com/cs/clothingoptional/l/bl_nb_ctysc.htm .
On 23 July I'm flying into LAX, hook up with one of my sisters and nephew and we're heading for a few days in San Francisco!!
I would so tr to have a caffinated beverage with you then, but I should be in VA again at that time....... have a nonfat mocha latte for me...
Crummy! Thanks for the tip! I actually just booked a seven day bus trip from San Francisco down the coast, out to Las Vegas, and then to L.A. It worked out perfect because we are getting to L.A. around the time that I had to be there to get on the island! I'm suuuuuuuuuper excited! What are few must see places in San Francisco, woudl you all say? I'm trying to decide if I want to spend three or four nights up there... A few things on my list: Fisherman's Wharf Golden Gate Bridge Haight and Ashbury Possibly Chinatown Anything else? Alcatraz was another possibility, but I didn't think it HAD to be a must see...sixteen bucks isn't bad though...so yeah...
I'm going to be visiting the Haight-Ashbury district, Golden Gate Park and taking a night tour of Alcatraz.
i totally have that shirt. i just got back from santa cruz im up there at least 5 times a year. you should go there for sure youd love it.
My favorite visitor spot in SF is Ocean beach and the Cliff House. Alcatraz itself isn't that interesting but riding the ferryboats in the Bay is really enjoyable. Anyway, PM me if you're gonna be around SF and want to meet up. Oh yeah, I don't think I'd do Green Tortoise, it may have been hip 20 years ago but now it's just another corporate whatever. My gf was a driver for them for a while and they treated her like shit. Plus I don't think they let buses on the Pacific Coast Highway which is where the best scenery is driving down the coast. But I'm not sure of that.
