it seems like the vast majority of astrology is very overgeneralized descriptions that could apply to just about anyone. but do daily readings or anything of that sort truly parallel any of your lives? what i mean is, how applicable is any of this to our normal day to day?

A good and proper reading yes.

    Newspaper and magazine horoscopes no.

Proper readings are not generalized at all and are based on YOUR information. If you do a reading based on anyone born between March 21st and April 20th, then yeah you'll get a crappy generalized reading.

Astrology is far from general. Its a very precise art, or science or whatever its seen as nowadays. Taking into account the fact that we dont just base any analysis on the sun sign alone, obviously, but the signs, degrees, houses and aspects of ALL the planets, its pretty difficult to get a "generalisation" and anything but an extremely profound and personal conclusion or high possibility
