wrong section maybe... seperating alcohol from listerine

i've noticed we have a full bottle of listerine that no one will claim and i noticed it is 14.6 percent alc. i've heard of people straight drinking listerine but i think that might be stupid and nasty as hell.

so what i'm asking, is there any ways to seperate the alcohol from the listerine without a bunch of extra equipment, something really simple if possible.

distilling listerine, the alcohol will evaporate at a low temperature and will we caught and separated from the listerine, nothing in the listerine with evaporate before the alcohol,

you would need to make yourself a distillation apparatus

actually the gas would then need to be cooled as it rises into the second chamber from the first evaporating chamber so it will reliquify

 

With all that trouble its easier, purer and cheaper to just buy a bottle of everclear.

well i already started something. and it seems pretty correct.

the ethanol's freezing point is too low to be frozen by a freezer, but all the other ingredients should freeze because their freezing points are higher than -18C. leaving me with a layer of pure alcohol?


can anyone confirm this?

no, it has stuff mixed in the mouthwash that you don't want to drink
other mouthwashes do have wood alcohol though, which you don't want to drink

 

one more question.... does anyone have an estimate of how long it'll take for the mouthwash to freeze?

 

If someone posts the ingredient list I can comment on the practicality of the isolation of the ethanol.

thats a lot of shit. i never looked up the freezing points for those things. i dont even know if this will work now.

 

The only alcohol in listerine is ethanol which is the "good" alcohol. It won't make you go blind.

 

yeah it definitely won't kill you or make you go blind (well unless you drink A LOT). It will likely cause digestive upset, leading to diarrhea or vomiting.

 

Thanks thats what I was wondering about, I'm fairly sure the "actives" are thymol, menthol, and eucalyptol. If you had a mixture of just alcohol, water and the actives these would freeze out before the alcohol/water mixture and they could be filtered. The menthol doesn't bother me but anything more than a trace of thymol and eucalyptol is nastiness waiting to happen. The situation is made much more difficult by the addition of glycerin and polysorbate 80. So it looks like distillation will be required. Yet even this will be difficult. A slow distillation gradually working up to the bp of etOH (and a little higher) with column packing might yield something not horrible. It will likely need to be redistilled a few times with sufficient cool down and cleaning between distillations. If this doesn't work one could try adding a little cooking oil to bind up the polysorbate, glycerol, then separating with a sep funnel before distillation.

haha, I'm bored and can't sleep. Just freezing might work...doesn't guarantee that you will have pure alcohol to pour off... good luck.
