I have an 80gb maxtor drive with windows xp pro installed
the other day my backup battery went dead turned off my comp and when i went to turn it back on it brought up "missing operating system"
I have tons of valuable info on that harddrive and connot loose it!!!
I've tried running chkdsk it tells me to use scandisk and then it says i can't use scandisk cause the drive is a network drive:(

You didn't lose the Drive. You lost the Bios settings. (Which are stored in RAM.) This can be easy enough to fix. FIRST!!! Replace that dead battery! Turn your machine on, and follow the manufacturers Specs to redo the Bios settings. Usually, this is to hit either "Delete" or F1, F5 or whatever key(s) while booting up. MOST times you can simply reload the factory Default settings.

The procedures depend on the manufacturer of YOUR machine. Someone else may know more. But, this is how it works on my HP Pavilion.

    Good luck!

You could always take your HD and put it in another computer that has a burner to get the stuff you need. Or install a new HD in your computer and copy the stuff you need off your old one on to your new one.

its simple to make a boot disk, format any floppy and select create an MS-DOS Startup Disk, access the command prompt, format the hard drive, boot from floppy, install operating system
