... hi from idaho , been hitch-hiking for two weeks ... though it's ne'r been unusual for me in thirty years of doing this to get an ID check while standing along the road , well , things is changing a bit . i was a passenger in a car whose driver got busted speeding , and i got asked for ID . " why? ", i said .

" for safety reasons , so we know who we're dealing with" ... idaho highway patrol .

then yesterday i was just walking in this little town , without any of my road gear - just a bag of groceries . yep , got stopped by a sheriff , hmmm , pulled over while walking and asked for ID .

    " really ", say i , "i protest . why? "

    " because i don't know you"

I know what you mean, my grandparents live in Buttfuck Nowhere, Kentucky. Whenever I go out on my own everyone gives me strange looks, like I don't belong there. Fuckin locals. I've never been asked for ID though.

I have family in Bean Station, TN (talk about nowhere...) and was hastled for ID there. When my aunt found out she went up to the sherriff and told him he ought to be ashamed of himself. :H

Similar topic: Ever heard of John Gilmore? You might be interested in this article, it is about ID and travel, among other things.

Hey, I have a friend near there, she lives in Morristown. She's mentioned Bean Station before...weird that anyone else really knows it exists, lol. She says it's tiny.

Can a cop legaly ask for your ID for no reason?
I thought you only had to have it on you, and that was the extent of it.

Hey that's crazy.. I'm from right next to Morristown lol..
I've also heard of Bean Station before. Never been there though, and can't say that I have the desire to go.

But back on topic, police suck.. Especially the small town cops with the big egos.

wow, didn't know how many people I would run into from the area :p

I have been to Morristown many times, that's where you have to go for groceries/clothes/everything when you are in Bean Station.

.........well their is no such thing as "no reason" a cop can make up a "reason"
to ask you for your id and you can not keep it from them.

actually the sheriff was polite enough , but it don't make it right . just a gypsy in a strange town and a camp by the river and your kinda vunerable . i never did show him ID , however i offered my name and birthdate and that satisfoed him ok so he check for felony warrants . even so , it pretty much amounted to a roadblock . got your papers in order ? mmm... yep , i'm licensed and certified to be a hitchhiker .
