I've always loved seeing Guided by Voices; and will be thoroughly disappointed after this, their last tour Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is probably my next favorite.... such incredible energy and stage presense! Weezer put on a great show as well. And for a good night of fun, let's not forget Tenacious D... they count, right?
As a spreadhead, I must recommend Panic. They are incredible live-sooo much energy-very groovy tunes. I've been going through withdrawls since New Years. moe., Keller Williams, Umphrey's, String Cheese, and the Flaming Lips also put on AWESOME live shows. Molly
That's a great question but I think its one you have to figure out on your own. Music is very much a personal thing. Many of the people who replied have suggested a plethora of bands spanning many genres. The cool thing about it is none of them are wrong. That’s the great thing about music. You just have to go out there and find your groove. Also, don't just limit yourself to one band either. Sure, phish was a great band, but there were hundreds of other talented bands around during the phish phase. Here's what I suggest. Check out this website: http://www.jambase.com/. Look for some shows and festivals around you. Just play the scene. Find something you like and spread the word. Also, don't be afraid to try something new or different. Maybe try something from a genre you're not familiar with. But the most important thing to remember is to keep an open mind. As for me...I always love a cheese show.
bluespade- thanks for the site, i have found a ton of local shows as well as shows that arre close enough to drive to during the school year. To anyone else reading this: i highly recommend that site to find good music near you.
panic is the best, but it's ALMOST 2005!! their 1st show back is gonna be kick ass. moe. is good i'm going to charlotte to see them this weekend.. sci primus kicks ass... nothing could be finer. les is awesome. ymsb
I've been to a few Phish shows and while Trey is a better musician, I have to say some moe shows blow them out of the water!!! moe. has a great sense of humor and while some lyrics are nuts.. they make sense unlike Phish's history of throwing random words on top of great music. I've never once been ripped off at a moe. show. The best stuff I've ever ingested has all come from a moe. lot or festival!!! Check it out, man. They may not replace them but it's a hell of a good time!!!!
Tea Leaf Green Primus Acoustic Syndicate Medeski, Martin, and Wood Bela Fleck and the Flecktones...I saw them this summer with YMSB and they were AMAZING!!! also amazing, went to the october 2nd show, patti smith with television
In agreement with TieDyeJim about his music choices... We're lucky... We live in North Carolina, with a very vibrant music scene in the mountains, at the coast, and everywhere in between... As far as live shows, I also really like STS9, Lotus (from Philly), and YMSB... Umphrey's McGee is really tight. I've only seen them play once, but the show was excellent. I'm not a huge Reggae fan, but I had a religious experience this summer... Burning Spear and his kickass horn section really rocked the hell out of Smilefest, here in the Carolinas. ON a totally unrelated note, I have seen excellent shows that weren't typical "hippie" shows. Gillian Welch and her wonderful songs and voice really captivated me earlier this year. She's a diamond. Saw her in the Cat's Cradle and thought about her performance for days. Wilco is the most important American band out there, in my little opinion, but they are not a dancing band.. And I love to dance... But Jeff Tweedy writes wonderful lyrics in what are often described as "deconstructed" songs...And then the band totally goes sonic and weirdass... And you realize there is something haunted and disturbed and fragile in these beautiful lyrics, and that they resemble you if you've ever considered yourself a poet. Tweedy is Dylanesque in his song writing abilities... That offends some since Dylan is so prodigious, but Tweedy is blessed with similar talent. Awesome! And these are just bands and artists that I have seen this year. North Carolina rocks...Even though we have the disturbing ability to vote REPBUBLICRAPICAN every stinking presidential election...North Carolina is still pretty killer despite that annoying little detail... Just stay out of the backwoods, if you know what I'm saying... And this doesn't mention all the smaller local things going on, with excellent bands like Abe Reid and the Spikedrivers to see in my local bars and clubs... ABE REID is the man, even though he won't be known on this board as much as he should be... I'm a HUGE fan of Barefoot Manner... Their contagious, infectious SpaceGrass really fills a void in my musical collection...They make me smile, stomp around, and go EXCELLENT with rampant late night behavior... (or early morning and afternoon for that matter...) They are starting to break into the scene musically, and have toured across the country. Check them out at http://www.archive.org for free "streams" from their incredible shows. Live music brings me so much joy. :H
I think your looking for Particle. Moe is great. Umphreys Mcgee is going to be the next phish though, no doubt about it.
Only one not yet listed: GEORGE CLINTON AND THE PARLIMENT FUNKADELIC!!! Their shows are fuckin' crazy - they all wear really crazy threads and they have sooo many members that they just keep a steady flow of people going on stage and off stage to get more fucked up. Its crazy. Its uncut, its da bomb. As others have mentioned SCI, moe., galactic, MMW, YMSB, Keller, Umphrey's uhhh so many great bands out there...
I've seen Incubus 3 times and have never been disappointed. Seen 311 twice, once on "311 Day" in New Orleans. Both shows were great, but "311 Day" blew me away! I'm already planning this year's trip. At 311's show in New Orleans in Aug. 2003, G. Love and the Special Sauce opened for them, and G. Love was unbelievable!! The entire audience was in to the Sauce. Given the choice between seeing any of the three again, I would choose G. Love and the Special Sauce, without a doubt in my mind
