I thought this would make for a fun/interesting thread... I know a lot of people have dogs AND cats (or a dog and a cat, etc) and a lot of them live inside most of the time... So, where do you hide the cat food? We have a dog and two cats. They're usually free to roam as they please, but spend most of their time (and all night) inside the house. And everyone knows, where there's food, there's the dog. Our kitty food bowls stay in the computer room. The door was removed from the computer room before we moved here, and we just haven't put it back on 'cause, well, it's the computer room, who really cares? So the door leans up against a wall, and there's a bowl of cat food hiding in there where the dog can't fit to get at it. The other bowl (since we have two cats and they can't both fit in one place at the same time) is under an old desk that we have. There's two drawers on each side, and the bowl stays under the drawers on the right side, with a box where the chair would be (the desk holds our old stereo) so the dog can't get under there. It's kinda funny, the dog food is out, open in the kitchen all the time, no matter what's in his bowl - kibble or real food. And the cats, for the most part, leave it alone. But despite the fact that the dog gets kibble any time he wants, AND a lot of meat, veggies, pretty much whatever we have for dinner... he STILL goes for the cat food if we don't hide it somewhere he can't reach! So, if you live in a house with cat(s) and dog(s), where do you hide the cat food?
We put our cat's food and water dishes on the kitchen counter. My dog can't jump very well, so he can't get up there. If worse comes to worse, you can always place the dishes on top of the fridge. Rather than hiding the food, why don't you just place it on an elevated surface?
If we put it up somewhere, either (1) the dog would get it... or (2) the cats wouldn't. We have two cats - one is a female, and she's 8 years old. That just makes her lazy, no explanation needed. The other is a male, and he's 4. He weighs around 15-18lbs. on average (he's not overweight) so he's not the most incredible jumper, more of a climber/runner than a jumper. If we put it up somewhere the cats were able to jump onto, the dog could easily reach it, too... he's a smart little bugger, he'd figure it out before the cats would, haha. Also, we don't let them on tables, counters, etc. There are VERY strict rules about that in our house, because they're both long hair cats and they shed A LOT. And the animals get equal rights, so dear puppy would figure "hey, if the cats can eat stuff off the counter, I can too!" and steal any food that we left up there. ...basically, all my animals are total dorks.
This might sound like a stupid idea but why not put the door back on in the computer room and put a cat flap in it, so the dog can't get at the food,if you're there or not Sorry if that sounds silly but that was the first thing that come to mind
Like everybody here, I live with both species--and as far as the cat food issue goes, I put it on the counter in an out-of-the-way corner so my dog won't be able to reach it--otherwise, he'd probably eat the cat food in addition to his own! LOL This way, though, the cat food is strictly "feline access only" and I don't have to worry about my dog getting into it!
we put it up on a dresser im my brothers room. all the cats stuff is in there, thats her special place and the dogs just avoid it. its always amusing watching the dogs interact with the cat. they know they have to watch out around her because i yell at them if they threaten her or try to chase her. sometimes the cat positions herself somewhere where the dogs have to go by near her and she hits them with her paw as they go by lol! so cheeky
The washing machine is my cat's dinner table. Easy clean up, and more sanitary than having her on the counter. Doesn't mean she doesn't get her head in my Lhaso's food dish and share his meal. But he can't get to hers.
Same here, except as I have a top-load washer, the cats take their meals on top of the dryer. I haven't solved the problem of keeping the cats out of the dog food yet!
the cat food in my house is in the downstairs toilet, barely used, and we've trained the dog not to go in there. simple as that, now she brings her food out to share her dinner on the living room floor. the cats are still fussy about food thats got to much biscuits with the meat but what the hell they should just live with it. the dog moves from a chair when one of the cats jumps up (mark of respect) but dare not approach the other one.
When we had a dog, we learned to keep the cat food dishes on a table in the room next to the kitchen. The bag of cat food went into the same barrel as the bag of dog food. Even though our dog passed away, we still have the cat dishes up on the table.
hmmm actually the cats eat the cat food and the dogs eat the dog food... ehy just like their own stuff i guess
I Have One Cat and 2 Dogs... 5 Year Old Female Cat... 8 Year Old Labrador... And a 15 Week Old Puppy... Fortunatly...When I First Got Cat...I went and Obtained a Huge Carboard Box... 22" by 22"... I Cut a Little Square Hole into the Box...Her Litter Tray Goes in There... By Opening Flaps at the Back... On Top of the Box...Is Where the Cat is Fed... The Dogs Can't Reach There... And the Box is Out of the Way...Outside of bathroom in it's Own Corner... So She Has Her Own personal Space for Toilet and Eating...
I have Two dogs and three cats...but ive always raised dogs and cats together and never had any trouble as long as you start them out when they are young....and teach them to be friends.... My oldest dog right now , Camille....all you have to do is tell her the cat is a baby....she LOVES babies...it doesnt matter what kind.....she goes into this tail wagging..high whine......and wants to love on it.....the cats share a dish....as well as the dogs...but they ALL share the water bowl....and they ALL eat on the floor. I had to train the dogs not to eat the cat food.....but the cats dont seem to care for the dog kibble..i think its too big for them to manage well.
Well I have 2 dogs and 2 cats. A 9 month old puppy, a 5 year old sharpee/pitbull, a 9 month old kitten, and a 5 month old kitten (all a handful believe me) but it's a wonderful home I put the cat food on the kitchen counter (like most other people) where the dogs can't get to it. I mean putting it on the fridge is a kinda farfetched idea but if worse comes to worse ya know....As far as putting up the door to the computer room and putting in a kitty door, I think that's a GREAT idea. It would take away the worry if your gone AND it would give the cats sanctuary from the pups.....
