    hey!
well I quit my job, cancelled my cellphone, ditched my car, broke my apartment lease, and am ready to abandon conventional living in search for a very simple life where I can live freely and sustainably. I'm really not out to single handedly save the world...i know that's impossible. But I do feel that the earth is my home and only have a small amount of time here so I want to immerse myself in things that make me happy, while protecting and caring for the environment and it's furry little inhabitants. Recycling, crafts, camping, carpooling, meditation, quality time with like-minded people, and all around simplicity makes me happy.
Also, i'm not a fan of commerce and other standards of living in society today, so i'm really looking for a place where I can go, trade and barter, raise animals, and work hard in exchange for food and lodging. I'd be most happy if I never had to see a dollarbill again in my life.
Anyone know a place like this that wouldn't mind having me around? Also, i'm basically fundless as it is now and did get rid of my car so i'm looking close to home, in Rhode Island, Mass, CT area. Any help is appreciated :)

Check out ic.org. It has a complete list of existing and forming communes that you can search by preference. Very useful, indeed. Good luck!!

    Hi

I have bartered for the last 7 yrs doing Intentional Cmty. I would start wtih Sirius Community in Shutesbury, Ma, but, by all means go to www.ic.org to the communities listings by state and look. My first thought when I read your ad was to look at Acorn Community in Mineral, Va. They are income sharing and in need of people. Massachusettes is full of communities, Rhode Island is not as plentiful, upstate NY has many, Conn has 1. Maryland has a few, Heathcote being one near Baltimore.

    Good luck!!

We have a community up & running in Texas. Check us out at echowood.org Perhaps some kind of transportation could be figured out if you're interested in visiting us.

Greenhornet, how does Echowood generate income to pay taxes, buy food,
    and other things.

In order for a community to exist, however communal it may be, it still needs
    income.

Hey ppl! Anyone interested in a commune/permaculture sort of living should check out this site... It lists ecovillages from all over the world. Most are pretty open to work exchange and visitors as well as volunteers. I hope its helpful!

Echowood is working on creating busnisses, cottage industries to help bring in more income. We currently sell produce at farmer's markets and will soon be selling free-range eggs.

A commune, as I understand it, is a community of like minded folks
who work together to support themselves separate from the big, greedy,
selfish business world we now live in.

Everyone in a commune works together to provide food and the general
    welfare of the community.

But, and this is ugly, a commune still has to pay property taxes, utility
bills, and other expenses. Therefore, for a commune of like minded
folks to survive they still need some income to pay these expenses.

A short term goal of a community is to first establish some form of
income. A second goal is to work to free themselves of these expenses.

I read a lot about Echowood. But they seem to put their first priorities
into building a sound recording studio and other fun things.
    NOT GOOD....
They seem to have their priorities mixed up.

The first priority should be establishing the ability to pay the taxes and
utilities first, and then, eventually, working to remove themselves
from the corporate grid, and finally self sustainment.

It takes a lot of sacrifice and hard work. It takes alot of time.

One would have to work harder and longer than they ever have in their
lives. Basically, you have to give up everything you own and work for
    the good of the community.

Until you understand this concept you are doomed to fail.
