i am looking to travel to Amsterdam in mid November. at first i couldnt figure out which hotel to stay at. but then from reading these forums and learning about apartment rentals (?), i'm starting if that would be a better option. i dont want to run into any issues as far as breaking the rules in a hotel.

can anyone give me some info on the pros and cons of hotel/apartment? i would be staying for about 4-5 days. and it would just be myself and a friend, maybe a third person. in addition, any links for hotel/apartment rentals would also be much appreciated.

well its just common sense on which would be better. aslong as uv stayed at a hotel and also stayed in a house/appartment u should know the differences.

as to which id prefer, its tricky. normally i onlythere for 1-2 nights and appartments have 3-4day minimum stays.

id personally rather stay in an appartment but hotels normally have better locations

Do you know what part of town you want to stay in and how much you can afford per night? That may help you decide.
Maybe even look into a houseboat, which is an apartment on the water without the stairs.
Apartments are all over the city, even in the most popular areas.
Try Rentalo, specify what you're looking for and do your homework regarding apartment reviews, etc. to make sure you're getting something decent. There are other web sites for apartments. Google Amsterdam apartments and get to it.
Anymore, I wouldn't stay in a hotel unless I had to. Apartment living is the way to go if you can find a happy place.
I'm going to assume that you're looking for someplace that allows smoking. Communicate that clearly to whomever you speak with and find out your options so there are no misunderstandings.

i'm actually not too sure what section of town i was trying to stay in. i would guess as close to the center of town as possible... as far as how much i want to spend a night, i would like to stay as cost effective as possible. but i guess how much i'd spend would depend on the quality of the room/apartment that we would get. i'm just gonna have to do some looking around and get some answers. do you have any suggestions of places that i could call? or maybe what websites to look at? and how are they with speaking English?

I mentioned Rentalo and for you to try and Google 'Amsterdam apartment'. Log onto Virtual Tourist and check out some people's Amsterdam pages. Lots of good info in there. Try the Amsterdam forum in TripAdvisor.
As with pretty much anywhere you go, the more central you want to stay or park, the more it's going to cost. Consider staying a little outside the Centrum to save euro on an apartment.
You would be lucky if anyone serves up an inexpensive, central apartment. You'll have to do some research to find something right for you.
Everyone under the age of 60 speaks English in Amsterdam, so that shouldn't be a concern for you.

I just came back last night from amsterdam and I have to say that the latest apartment I stayed at was great. I would check with StayAmsterdam if you are looking to rent something. The staff is great, they speak perfect english and the apartment was the nicest I have seen so far. Good luck
