this little chickys mom left the nest when his siblings were born (staggered hatch). when i found the eggs they were all cold and his had a little hole in it where hed started to hatch. i picked around the hole a bit and poked him but he seemed pretty dead. put him under the heat lamp anyway with the other eggs, came back and he was chirping! i ended up doing all the work for him cause he was stuck to the the inside of the egg (not enough humidity) and he hatched right into my hand :)

that brown spot is a blood stain from me trying to pull the shell off before he was ready. and few more hours and it came off fine.

thank for the comments guys :)
hippychickmommy, i hope your kids like them. i was so fascinated with chicks when i was little.
these two were so cute, i kept them in a basket with a light for a few days before putting them outside. they were the best little garden companions. id just plop them in the bed i was working in and theyd run around eating bugs and scratching but never straying far and running back cheeping if a moved too far away lol. theyre outside with momma now though-

thats the new house i made for them. its rat proof so i wont lose any babies.

theres momma hen, shes very protective. shes always finding bugs and things and when she does, she clucks for her babies who all trip over each other to get to her, then she drops it on the ground for them to fight over lol.

and there they are trying to get inside. i need to put some tar paper or wire on that ramp, they keep slipping off lol.

i hope everyone enjoyed these, especially if you live in the city

dilligaf- what kind of chicks do you have?

they are the mutts of the chicken kingdom ;) ... we have aracaunas, redstars and a few varieties of the polish hippie type ... needless to say we have some really funny lookin babies,,, they will all be heading outside hopefully today....

sweet little house you have for them wanderin blues... remember those old bathtub stickies you can put to not slip n fall ... they work pretty well for ramps n such too..:)

    hey, good idea thanks!
i love random mutts, its so interesting to see how they will turn out when they grow up. i only have pure breeds right now except for one rooster, so its still pretty boring. i think the little black ones will be cool looking though, they are silver laced cochin crosses (i think).

My kids loved the pictures. I explained to them what you did, how you rescued the chicks. They were thoroughly impressed and kept saying how cute the little chick was. :)
