We are pleased to announce that the Gathering of the Vibes will once again be teaming up with Strangers Helping Strangers to host a large non-perishable food and hygiene product drive at the 12th Annual Gathering of the Vibes, which will take place at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, CT on August 9-12, 2007. All donations collected this year will be benefiting the Bridgeport Veterans Food Pantry, a relatively new food bank within the Bridgeport community operated by the Bridgeport Office of Veterans Affairs. What kind of items are you collecting? We are collecting non-perishable food items. Some of the items in demand at most food banks include: *Baby formula*Baby food*Canned vegetables*Canned soups*Canned non-perishable meat*Pasta and sauce*Macaroni & cheese We are also collecting personal hygiene products, such as: *Deodorant*Soap*Shampoo*Shaving products*Toothbrushes & toothpaste*Mouthwash *Q-tips*Diapers*Sanitary pads Please make sure to check the expiration dates on any items you may grab out of your pantry. We have found several items donated in recent months that were years out of date. Generally if something is a little over that date it's fine, but anything that is more than a couple of months past its shelf date is probably going to be thrown out by the food bank rather than distributed to those in need. Thanks! Why is this food drive so important? This time of year can be very difficult for food banks nationwide, especially a food bank that is still in its developmental years like the Bridgeport Veterans Food Pantry. Most food banks collect the bulk of their annual donations around the holidays and during the colder winter months. As the weather gets warmer people tend to overlook the fact that there are those that are less fortunate year-round and not just during the colder months or around the holidays. Come summertime many food banks' shelves grow empty. This food and hygiene item drive will provide an opportunity for all festival attendees to give back to the Bridgeport community and work together to help the many brave men and women who have given their time to serve our nation and protect our freedoms. Unfortunately, we do not have any more guest list spots available for official weekend volunteers, but if you would like to help, please drop us an email or just stop by the table during the festival.
