not for their purpose, I think theyre doing a great job with all the things they do to save the environment, but... I hate the kind of wilderness society people who come to my university, bail me up for 10 minutes, try play on my heartstrings with opposing images of cute furry animals and total destruction all printed on plain white bleached paper while they stand there and and try and make me feel guilty for feeling like I cant actually afford to donate $15 (approx $7US) a week from the $50 (approx $25 US) to buy my uni books, my bus trips and everything else I need. What the fuck do they need that much money A MONTH for, from every single donator, like what the fuck are they gonna do with it? I know, theyre gonna print off more folders full of guilt trip images on nice unrecycled paper so they can recruit more people harrass uni students about the horror of cutting down trees for woodchips and paper. If I could afford to have them DIRECT DEBT my account every month, I probably would, but what the fuck is the deal with hitting working class students with this crap! You know what? If i didn't get bombarded with the guilt trip and have 10 minutes of my time wasted, when clearly I was on my way to a class and didnt have 10 minutes to spare, I would have donated! you know what I would have donated $5 right there and then, and I reckon lots of others would have too. So all I have to say to wilderness society people is stop wasting paper on printing guilt trips and start asking people who can actually viably afford to have you direct debt thier account oh and leave me the fuck alone unless you've got something that isnt contradictary to say:$
You realize that's less than a dollar a day (in US dollars, anyways), right? Shit, if you're getting your university books, bus trips and EVERYTHING ELSE on 25 american dollars a week, count yourself blessed. That shit, especially books, is way more expensive over here than it appears to be in Australia. Shit, I think I need to emmigrate.
no I have to save up those pennies to be able to afford my books. less than a buck a day, sure... but I could save a person for that, so i'd rather do that than give the money to people who print off thousands of flyers to pester people about paper usage
The problem is they are using emotion as a tool for their argument. Unfortunately most humans submit themselves to emotion. My advice to everyone is this: if you really care about the environment, do the research yourself and find out what the real issues are, underneath the emotion.
I totally agree about them using emotion, and you know what, it's damn insulting more than anything else
You can always do your bit for the environment for free at sites like: www.ecologyfund.com www.theenvironmentsite.org www.care2.com www.therainforestsite.com
Would you happen to be talking about the Conservation society that's been posted in the mall this week, retro?? I shot down one of their girls today and she gave me this mean scowl... I felt pretty bad, she obviously recognised me as someone who'd be interested in that stuff usually but I was running late for a tute! Besides, I donate to the wilderness society already, amongst other charities and I do a helluva lot more than the average person and, yes, I do it all on Youth allowance, too! But I agree that pinning people down at shopping centres and at unis is not the best technique... and they hardly ever get people to sign up anyway!!
I would cinsider that any money really going towards saving the enviroment is money going towards saving people. We can't live without an ecosystem that can support us But I hate being guilt-tripped for money myself. Oh, here is a easier way to do some saving of the environment (click the link, and all the money they get from ad sponsors goes to preserve sections of the rainforest) Its free http://www.therainforestsite.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/CTDSites.woa/547/wo/lK20009Q600jv300Z4/3.35.0.1.0.0.0.CustomContentActiveImageDisplayComponent.0.0.0
