Someone please tell who they are exactly, what their threat is? Bush was going after Bin Laden right after 09/11, but he seems to think that threat is no longer one we should be threatened by. Does Bin Laden lead the Al Qaeda, if they are present in Iraq, why did we allow over 100,000 arms to go missing, was it to arm them? I think if we knew exactly who the enemy was we could be better prepared.

Easy to say extremists and terrorists...if you can't define them you can't fight them.

If we know he's hiding in Pakistan and our country gives them aid, shouldn't we apply pressure to have him apprehended? Or should we have told Pakistan to step aside and gone in after him? Your call.

But it seems to be easier to blame the Iranians, perhaps even the Syrians and the Iraqis who have no really form of government for causing this problem.

Know what Al Qaeda wasn't in Iraq until the US bombed the shit out of their country and armed the opposition.

Makes you proud to be an American doesn't it.

There's always two versions of the story. I don't pay much attention to what "they" say al-Qaeda is, only what the evidence points to them as being.

If they haven't "caught" bin Laden yet (that is if they don't already have him or are working in close connection with him) you can bet there is a reason for it. They expect us to believe they simply cannot find him, when the US has satellites that can see through thick walls.

But all the evidence points to him as being a patsy of western intelligence.

Alqaeda is a Phantom Boogeyman, a tiny Insignificant Terrorist group used by US Political Elite to further their Imperial ambitions, Bin Laden, when you see him in the video where he declares war on the United States surrounded by Gunmen, actually hired local Militiamen to stand in for the video's he made to give the declaration some semblence of Teeth(Source:BBC The Power of Nightmares), this gives you some idea of how big and threatening the organization is, it's certainly real and dangerous to an extent, just very small and unorganized.

Gardener, if you truly want to know the answer, then you should research it. There is a mountain of information out there all you need to do is look. Like anything, be aware of your sources. I bet you would be surprised at what you find. You will not find unbiased answers here.

Al-Qaeda is a code word for anyone in the world who doesn't agree with US policies concerning the "War on Terrorism". The public likes code words. Its the very meat and potatoes of propaganda/social engineering.

    Allow me to translate,

Al- Qaeda is anyone who doesn't wish to live in a world controlled by the United States, and "friends".

    Viva La Resistance.

(And welcome to the New World Order.)

Been there done that. And I am not one of the faceless masses that buy into the terrorist hysteria everytime it's politically feasable. Obama, Hillary and most of the major candidates are all selling the same boogeyman.

Sorry I openned my closet, looked under the bed, and turned on the light, time to find a new monster.

the whole al-qaeda and Osama bin Laden thing was put into people minds along time ago It was 1987! Lt.Col. Oliver North testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the Reagan Administration.

There was Ollie in front of God and country getting the third degree, but what he said was stunning!

He was being drilled by a senator; "Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?"

Ollie replied, "Yes, I did, Sir."

The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, "Isn't that just a little excessive?"

    "No, sir," continued Ollie.

"No? And why not?" the senator asked.

"Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, sir."

"Threatened? By whom?" the senator questioned.

"By a terrorist, sir" Ollie answered.

"Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?"
"His name is Osama bin Laden, sir" Ollie replied.
At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued. Why are you so afraid of this man?" the senator asked.

"Because, sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of", Ollie answered.

"And what do you recommend we do about him?" asked the senator.

"Well, sir, if it was up to me, I would recommend that an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth."

The senator disagreed with this approach, and that was all that was shown of the clip.

By the way, that senator was Al Gore!

Interesting. I kind of remember the Iran Contra hearings, but when it comes to Ollie North I thought he was smarmy lying pond scum. But many bought into his clean cut uniformed persona.

It's a radical, fundamentalist Muslim group with some armaments and training provided by the CIA to fight against Soviet Occupation during the attempted Soviet occupation in their decade-long war (this failure being one important cause of the break-up of the Soviet Union).

Al Queda wasn't even formed until the year the Soviets left Afghanistan and it received no aid from the US.

I'm sure Gardener is more afraid of Mexicans trying to get a job that the Al Queda boogeyman, but Al Queda has been on a killing spree all across the world. Aid workers and journalists who get kidnapped and decapitated for its recruitment videos, along with the thousands of more anonymous victims, don't find it to be a boogeymen.

I don't want to sound indifferent, I do understand how inconvenient it is for Bush haters for Al Queda to exist, but it happens to be real.

The greatest trick of the devil was convincing the world he did not exist.

Like many other "enemies" of the US, Bin Laden and Al Qaeda have their roots in American backed policies. Many of the first members of Al Qaeda were members of the US backed Mujihideen before 1988. When the soviets left Afghanistan, the US backed Taliban and Mujihideen moved in and Al Qaeda was born. We create our own enemies with our flawed foreign policies.

Do you think they would of left without U.S. intervention?
    ? ok.
So you consider helping to remove the Soviets from Afghanistan, flawed?
