LOL, I didn't say it prevents your muscles from moving. ;) I said it prevents one from gainning muslce, as in it breaks down chemically and interferes on a biological level. I don't know the specifics in my head, but when I get home after the gym tonight I'll do some research, since it really is interesting information and I think some of us should know it. (myself included because it was long ago that I read about it).

And just because you personally have been able to lift more weight while stoned, that is not the general rule of thumb. There are a lot of personal experiences that people have that can't exactly be said for everyone, just remember what works for you might not work for someone else.

Ok guys, as promised I just spent about 2 hours (ok so I got side tracked arguing with someone about pot) searching for some info on muscle strength and marijuana consumption. This is the only information that I could come up with. Take it with a grain of salt, because I have no idea about the sites it all comes from. I put them down there though if you want to go back and check them out. I tend to generally not believe the government, simply because they lie. LOL.

I couldn't exactly find out why it causes a loss in muscle strength, but every site said it does, so I'm just guessing that it is on a biochemical level as it is a muscle relaxant and an over all downer. I would just imagine that it causes our muscles to simply become weaker. That coupled with the fact that it supposedly (and I couldn't find conclusive evidence because I read conflicting articles) it diminishes the body's testosterone (which is needed for building muscle mass/strength). I hope this is making some sense to those of you who were curious. Please feel free to post any more info if you find it as I think it would be appropriate in this thread. Most of what I came up with was about coordination and cardiovascular impedances.
“Studies consistently show that marijuana interferes with growth and reproductive hormones. This is of particular significance to developing adolescents who are going through a very vulnerable period of rapid and complex biochemical changes.

The chemicals in marijuana affect the parts of the brain which control and regulate the sex and growth hormones. In males, marijuana can decrease the testosterone level. Testosterone is a major growth hormone and is essential to the completion of the growth process in young males. This process, including the broadening of shoulders, enlargement of muscles in the chest, biceps, and buttocks, deepening of the voice, beard growth and genital development, is dependent on adequate hormone levels. For a long time parents and physicians have described the typical male "pot head" as having narrow shoulders, lack of muscle development (particularly in upper arms, chest, buttocks and upper leg), pale looking face and heavy-lidded eyes. Pediatricians and endocrinologists report increasing cases of pubertal arrest which seem to be marijuana- related. The occasional cases of enlarged breasts in male marijuana users seem to be triggered by the chemical impact on the hormone system.” ~

“Q. Can occasionally smoking marijuana hurt athletic performance?

    A. "The athlete who uses marijuana, even on a casual basis, experiences very significant effects that have a direct bearing on athletic performance," says Roy T. Bergman, M.D.

Bergman, who has served on the medical staff for U.S. Olympic and Pan American Games teams, points to studies showing that marijuana decreases exercise capacity. It inhibits sweating and temperature control. The drug impairs coordination, steadiness and accuracy. It slows reaction time and interferes with judgment of speed, time and space relationships. Marijuana can also cause short and long-term memory loss and prolong learning time. In addition, regular use is strongly associated with apathy, loss of ambition, difficulty in concentrating, and a decline in academic performance.

These negative effects have not stopped all athletes from taking the drug, however. For example, 36% of athletes involved in NCAA competition had used marijuana during the previous year according to one study. And in a survey of elite women athletes, 17% of the respondents said they too had used the drug in the last year. Other studies have concluded that marijuana is second behind alcohol as the substance most commonly abused by athletes.

Marijuana users often argue that a smoke now and again, or perhaps a spiked chocolate chip cookie, is less harmful to performance than alcohol. However, both can be quite damaging to success in sport. And in one respect, marijuana may be more of a physical threat than alcohol: The psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, THC, enters the fat tissue where it can be gradually released into the blood to cause effects 24 to 36 hours after the drug was last used.” Patrick J. Bird, Ph.D.

Once at a diving competition I was in this guy was competeting that was incredibly high. His trainer tried to get him disqualified but it was too late. He got up on the 10m platform and just walked right off and flailed in the air screaming "I'm flying!"

    Hey everyone,

I just wanted to add a few thoughts.

I never should have started a thread that was pro "high workouts". Its definately not a healthy thing to do.

Really I just wanted to find out if there were any other people who did it. (not to many people do:&)

I gotta admit though, I still do it

When I'm smoking the last thing on my mind is any kind of physical exertion. As far as pot degrading athletic performance... Like cutelildeadbear said, take it with a grain of salt...

Besides pot is one of the few vices I have left, I really don't want to give up my midnight toke :p

Although I have stopped drinking altogether after reading an article about what alcohol does to your metabolism...

    Thanks greengoddess.
I agree, my workouts are 33% easier if I haven't smoked in a few days, but I enjoy them 75% more when high. Its a give and take kinda thang.

If you're completely stoned out of your mind, then yes, you may be a harm to yourself or others at the gym. Being slightly high (or how well you have a grip on it) can be perfectly "okay". People say this & that, but most of them aren't even healthy in the first place. Being healthy takes a lot more than only exercising. As for moi, I know that if I'm high, then lifting weights may seem/feel more difficult, but I'm also more focused on my form which is what should be done in the first place. I'm careful with what I research and where it's coming from, so I don't have much else to give you. Sometimes experience is just the best way if you can't trust your sources. But here's a good link on the physiological effects: http://www.druglibrary.org/SCHAFFER/Library/studies/ledain/physiological_effects.htm.

LOL. You all most certainly can believe and or do whatever you like, as I've already stated, but as an athlete, someone who is quite physically fit and a personal trainer, I still do not recommend working out while under the influence of any drug. What one does before or after his/her workout is thier own business, but while you are working out, it is definitely not a good idea nor is it helpful in any way to your performance. Don't read drug articles to get your information, read articles written by doctors and professionals in the fitness industry. Have any of you ever once considered that it isn't actually helping you, but you just preceive it to be? Trust me I'm not anti pot, or anything of that nature, but when I'm stoned, things seem different to a degree than they actually are. So while it might seem to you that you are concentrating on your form better, it is doubtful in my professional opinion that you are. And if one is actually concerned with being physically fit and working out hard core to begin with (because I can only imagine the types of workouts you people are doing stoned) then you wouldn't really be putting that into your body to begin with.

I get lightheaded as it is, now that I don't indulge as often, I don't know if adding a work out would be good for me.

i enjoy them more whilst high but can't perform nearly as well.

it's definately a give and take kind of thing.

i like experiencing both, but i can do a lot more while not high so i enjoy that better, but occasionally i'll go high as it motivates me to go the other days. i really feel the exercise i do when i'm high, and i get completely focused in my set, on my rep.

Hmmm, I avoid going to the gym high. I assumed it would be a bad idea. But I am only using the treadmill for walking and using a jump rope. Maybe I'll have a smoke before I go to the gym today. I'll let you know how it goes...

I would never go to the dojo high though, I'd probably get my ass handed to me.

I get stoned before going to the gym but I run on the treadmill for 30 minutes first. By the time I get to the weights I would hardly consider myself a danger to anyone. Plus smoking weed doesn't fuck you up that much (or I smoke so much it doesn't fuck me up, it gets me high but not "fucked up").

ok this is a reply to everyone basically in here. I am a certified personal trainer for over 5 years. Was a gym manager, and have seen it all. As for getting sources on ANY type of workout, or anything, is never 100% accurate. I do not disagree that working out stoned is indangering yourself and others. You and only you can know your limits. Smoking a bowl, to get a little motivation and pump may make some achieve status in the clouds above, but for the most people I know, it is just a little kick. If you have ever watched Pumping Iron, Arnold blazes! Arnold may not smoke all the time, and maybe neither do anyone of you or maybe you do. But as I said, each person is different. I honestly don't know anyone in their right mind to squat 500lbs high. I'm sure no one in here is at that level and if so then to smoke up before your workout is just riduculous, since you should have motivation to workout at that point in the game. I have come up with some pretty creative and inventive workouts and exercises ripped, not saying I would show them to others. I am a responsible trainer and would never encourage this. But the main thing here is that, if you get munchies, and you eat, and work out. Unless you are smoking a ridiculous amount of this lovely green grass your gains should not be affected, instead in my case I gained quite a bit. To each his own. Obviously, the amount you smoke and the effect it has on the person, if you are giggling and telling jokes and getting giddy at every girl in the gym, then you aren't getting a proper workout in anyways. Whether someone is high or not can put everyone in the gym at risk, like squatting 500lbs if you can't really do it. You are at risk everytime you walk in the door of a gym, hence the waivers we get you to fill out. So no matter what, the main thing is to be responsible for your own actions.

Yep, I'd say I blaze half of the time I work out...but it's usually at the midpoint of my workouts. My workouts usually consist of walking, jogging, or biking on forest trails. So I'll go out, smoke a bowl, then make my way back to where I started from. But, it's usually less of a workout and more of a leisure activity, the exercise I get is just an added bonus!

I used to work out in the gym, and I never, nor would I ever smoke before going there. I was always way too self-conscious that people were watching me when I was working out, and I'm sure being high would have made that much much worse. Plus I tend to be clumsy while high, so the gym and marijuana wouldn't be a good idea for me personally.

I'm glad I stumbled on to this formum, any continuing interest in the subject? I'm a certified personal trainer and find the topic of "high" workouts pretty interesting. Word to the wise, vaporizing, as opposed to combustion methods, before attempting any aerobic-type workout will prove to be much less taxing on the cardiovascualr system, especially where lung capacity and capillary gas exchange is concerned.

I think that you really dont understand the health benefits of actually using cannabis. Number one it doesnt decrease testosterone that study was found to be untrue, and really do you think smoking a little bit of green is going to grow man breasts. I dont think so. For a lot of people me being one of them cannabis has been a helpful part of my life, i am able to get a full nights rest with, my motivation to get stuff done around the house is increased. WEED is much safer than juice.

I like how you said you dont like to quote the government becasue they lie. Well this is one of the biggest lies the government has come up with. "Marijuana is bad and if you smoke it, it will kill you." Pretty harsh considering if you wanted to overdosed on thc you would have to take 40,000 times the amount it take to get you high, when in comparison alcohol is 10 times.

Back to the topic of Stoned Work outs. Just because some one takes a hit before going to the gym doesnt make them a clown, the clown are the people with no sense of courtesy and no manners. I have found i little dose of cannabinoids really helps my muscles work together. Makes it really enoyable and cant wait to do it the next time. Then again to each is own. Do what you do be responsible about it, and if you are responsible then don't let any one tell you otherwise.

Also cannabis is a very good expectorant for the lungs cleans them out kind of like a cough drop does you throat. The are quite a few marathon runners that smoke cannabis because it help them breath deeper and get into that alpha wave zone.

If you dont smoke weed because you work at the Y then that is sad. No business or employer has any right to know what you put into your body. especially if you can drink alcohol. the way you talk you dont seem like much of a dead head. Do some research on the benefits of cannabis not only for the body but for the enviroment.

If it wasnt for weed i wouldnt be working out again, and i know im not the only one who can say that. If ever god put a miracle on earth cannabis was that miracle. Take advantage of this beautiful plant any way you can.

    Smoke Weed.
