I was at a flea market today with my brother and we decided to buy some small buddha statues. One cost $5 and the others were about $2 a piece. It didn't even enter my mind until now that the material they are made of looks similar to ivory. I am a vegan and would be very upset if this turned out to be actual ivory. What I want to know is...is there any way to tell if it's real or fake and...would real ivory even be that cheap in the first place. I'm really beating myself up over this! Thanks for your help, guys. Peace.
I don't think they would sell straight up ivory for 5 and 2 dollars a piece. In fact I'm almost positive.
For that price they are most likely resin cast. See if you can find some casting marks. If they are ivory or bone you will notice impurity in the color and they will have a grain.
I buys stuff all the time, and get home and say . O crap this is leather. but yea If you got them for five bucks I'm sure they're fake ivory. Nice sig btw, blues for allah is a great album, and Huxley is a great writer
thanks for all of the responses, I certainly hope it wouldn't be skull either, though I'm pretty sure it's just some cheap material, can never be too sure though. It is true, about the material aspect, I try not to buy much but these statues just caught my eye and I thought they would be nice...didn't really think it through.
are you thinking about the weight? bone and ivory have heft. Also, at that price as a newish item, resin/plastic is my sight-unseen guess.
