Hey Kids! I have lived in Amsterdam for about four months now, much of that time (especially in the beginning!) was spent wandering the canals lost, and being paranoid of leaving home for fear of never making it back ;-) Now, I'm quite familiar with the city, local hotels, cheap (better than the ones in the guidebooks-tourist oriented ones) coffeeshops, and inexpensive places to get good grub... Should you be stopping by, shoot me an email- I would be more than glad to meet you at the station to help you find your hotel or hostel, and give you a quick (and I hear, enlightening) tour and rundown of the streets, metro, trams and night buses in A'dam... and willing to divulge as much as I know about anything here... Though I am not charging for these services, donations are greatly appreciated... shoot me an email so we can get a little friendly-like ;-) Jessica wandering_boheme@yahoo.com
Although I don't need a tour guide I'd be interested in hearing your take on the cheap non-touristy coffeeshops? Jon
i'll be making my first trip to amsterdam from oct.10 to oct.14. i'm looking forward to the trip and researching the net. (it's how i found this site about a week ago.) i'm usually pretty good at getting around, but the city does look a little confusing with the canals, alleys and circular streets. i've booked a room at the nicolaas witsen hotel and wonder if that's a good spot to be? keep in touch, maybe we'll meet there.
Very interesting offer, Jessica. I wish you well, but be careful. You may get more than you bargain for...
Its a great town, I went last summer for my first time, and I was terrified about going to a foriegn country that doesnt speak english. I thought I wouldnt have a clue! It was real easy though, took a train straight from schipol to central station no problems. I am going back November 23-29, and am so excitied.
Well my first time going I didnt really know what to expect. I wasnt sure if many people spoke english there. (I hadnt done much research, it was a quick spur of the moment trip I took when I was living in London) I never did go anywhere though where they didnt know it, had a great time, and the people were as nice as could be.
There is a good chance I will be back in Amsterdam in March or perhaps early April. I'll buy you dinner in your favorite restaurant. After we walk amoung the roses in Vondel Park while I tell you what Amstredam was like for me as a teenager in the late 60s.
heheheeee..... yes, cheap non-touristy coffeeshops are the kind you'd most likely get lost finding on your own, because the tend to be slightly away from the center (still in a'dam).... when i have more time, i'll post a list of my faves, but "Het Wolkje" in the rivierenbuurt (near the Amstel station) has 5 grams of white widow for 25EUROS.... not too bad ;-) WE1... you can do that, and even more... hahahaa-i need a place to crash until wednesday so anyone with a floor in need of warming, give me a ring (i won't be online again til tomorrow-and there's some rain coming in!!) 0648617994 alright then, kids.... again, feel free to emil me, too, i always check them... ::::Blessings::::: Jess
