Anybody around Cambridge? I'm going to uni there in a month and I've never even visited (I know, I'm impulsive). What's it like? Any good places to eat/drink? Any hip folk from round there?

I went to uni there, graduated this year. I'm assuming you're going to ARU if you haven't had to visit for an interview? Good places to eat include First Choice, the best kebeb shop in the world and good student discounts, the Kohinoor Indian restaurant on Mill Road and a good five pounds all you can eat Chinese place on Norfolk Street. The Junction is good for drum n' bass and old skool rave nights, and from time to time you might hear of a rave out on Grantchester Meadows where Pink Floyd used to go to practice. Cambridge is a great place and I'm sure you'll love it....

I've seen excrement that looks more edible than the stuff they serve in Holloway Best Kebab. It's all about First Choice....

Is Cambridge full of posh-toff's like I'd think it would be? I heard the same about Bath Spa, which has kind of put me off it.:(

There are some, but it's not as bad as you'd think. It depends what college you're at, but less than half the people in the uni come from public schools now. Unfortunately it's still one of only two universities with under 10% working class attendence - the other being, yep, you've guessed it, Oxford. Still, the days of wealth and land assuring you a place are thankfully long gone. A lot of the people there are really quite like me, and if I'm not a posh toff then the answer to your question is no. I never really socialised with the toffs that much, except for the down to Earth ones. And of course townies still outnumber gownies, and also a good portion of students in Cambridge go to ARU and they're often pretty sound. So if you go out in the town, you're pretty much guaranteed a toff-free night....

hollowayjay: results come out next thursday (the 16th). However, since I'm 19, I got mine a year ago ;)
Peace-phoenix; yep you guessed right, I'm going to ARU. I'm not smart/posh/rich enough for Cambridge.
Studying Ophthalmic Dispensing. Obscure I know, but I've worked in an opticians for four years and I'm bloody fed up of getting paid peanuts for doing basically everything the dispensers do, but since I'm not qualified (IE don't have a piece of paper) i can't get paid as much. fuck's sake.
EDIT: I've no idea of Cambridge geography, but I'll figure it out. Thanks for the recommendations! Although I'm not really into kebabs unless I'm SERIOUSLY bladdered. So I'll be going there a lot then...

Sal I challenge you in the name of all that is sacred and cool and stuff to find me a chip roll more packed than those of Holloway Best Kebab. When you naively think this accomplished, we shall meet at dawn (preferably a misty one) in Hampstead Heath or the Backs near Queens or somewhere else suitably eerie to compare and contrast and eat. The loser will be smothered in garlic sauce.
