Does anyone here know anything about Rotavirus? My daughter went to go to the clinic to get her immunizations. We don't have insurance right now and the doctor told us to take her to the free clinic. I didn't want to take her there, but my whole family badgered me and I finally gave in. I feel like an asshole, I should have stuck to my gut. Acording to the doctor the shots didn't give her the rotavirus, but it seems kinda coincidental to me the yesterday she got vaccinated against it and today she has it. Sorry, had to rant a minute. Anyhow the people at the hospital and the doctor both said not to breastfeed for now and to just give her pedialite, but after doing some of my own research, I found info saying that she should be breastfed throughout, still giving her the pedialite to help replenish the lost fluids. I read in a phamplet this morning at the hospital that it causes death and read on a website that death is unlikely in the US and more likely in smaller countries with less nutrition options. I haven't found anything on how long it lasts or any kind of natural treatment to help. The doctors say not to let my two year old son, who absolutly loves his sister, give her hugs and kisses. How am I supposed to keep my son from giving her hugs or wanting to hold her. Is the contamination period shorter than the actual infection period. I don't know what to think. I'm half nervous and kinda pissed at the same time. It said that most children have been infected before the age of five, so I'm sure that someone here has had some experience.

I am probably not a good person to answer. I am completely biased AGAINST vaccinations. But:

Research thoroughly before vaccinating your children. And I don't just mean reading the blogs for/against them, or pamphlets. Look at the ingredients lists in them. Look up each ingredient. Do you want aluminum products and other unnessecary heavy metals in your child's body? Do you truly believe that a baby that is breastfed and not in daycare is susceptible to some of these things? Are you guys clean enough to keep the risk of infection down besides?

And you should drop the pedialyte unless she's not peeing as much. Just let momma nurse as much as possible for as long as possible. Her breasts will know when baby is sucking for food or for rehydration and adjust accordingly. :)

I hope you guys get through this with no ill effects! *hugs*

I whole heartily agree with Holly on the constant breastfeeding. As long as mama is well hydrated your little one will be fine. Pedilyte should only be used as a last resort. I hate how peds always try to ward people off from breastfeeding. How do they think we as humans survived and evolved this far in life? jeez, lol. As far as I know my babes have never had rota virus so I am sorry I can't offer more help there. :( Is there anyone who would watch Skye during the daytime until it is safe for him to be near her? As heartbreaking as that would be it is probably the least confusing way (for him)to keep him from being too close to her. I hope shes ok! I'll be thinking of you guys. Keep us updated on how shes feeling. :(

She was looking pale and being kinda sluggish, we decided shortly after my first post that it would be absolutly stupid of us to hold off on breastfeeding, so my wife slipped her the boob. I almost literally watched her color come back. You can tell she's not feeling good, but she was a lot happier. I've already accepted the fact that Skye will most likely end up catching the virus. There really isn't anyone who he could stay with. He is washing his hands a lot, and we are trying to limit physical contact as much as possible. Every time Axi cries though he has to make sure she is alright. We will get though it.

good to hear you and your family is doing better. some doctors are correct some are idiots but no matter what always listen to your gut instinct. especially when the doctor says to stop breastfeeding your sick child that would makes no sense. i dealt with the same incident many of times and the pediatrician told me to breastfeed constantly. if your daughter has the virus it will most likely end up that every one in the household will end up with it eventually just keep washing hands and sanitizing surfaces. good luck and keep on breastfeeding the babe

Doctors will never admit that they do damage to children. When they give a shot with a live virus in it, yes, the child will get the virus and yes, they will expose everyone in the household to it. Breast milk is by far better for her than pedialyte. Nurse her as often as she will. The doctors, who no nothing about breastfeeding, are relating to it as they would bottle feeding. Cow's milk is not good for a sick child. (Or a healthy child in my opinion). So pedialyte is good for a sick child if they are on cow's milk.

She doesn't get cows milk. Nothing but booby juice. My son gets soy milk instead off moo juice. Axi seems to be feeling a bit better, though she's still a little under the weather. She was back to being little Miss Smiley with me last night, and playing peek-a-boo between throwing up.
