    Where do you stand?

Can you see where you're going, or do you need an answer book?

Personal revelation comes from having inner light. This light shows you the path, as opposed to those who have no inner light and stumble in the darkness.

Just be a good person. Compassion will take you a long ways down the path.

A little of both! Surrendering to God is a great way to dissolve the ego, personal introspection is another way to let the ego dissolve - either way, you move beyond yourself into something 'greater' or whatever you would like to name it. Perhaps you wouldn't name it at all.
