I'm really trying to figure out what I want to do about college. I really am sure that I would like to teach elementary school, but I am also fascinated by art. I'm not sure that I would want to make a career out of art, though, because I'm not really into the typical pencil drawings and paintings sort of thing, or even graphic design. I'm more into the study of artistic theory and art history, theater arts, philosophy, sculpture (even though I could use some practice...), photography, ceramics, and glassblowing, to name a few. I guess what I'm asking is... what are my options? Is it possible to major in Education and minor in random-art-tidbits, lol? Sorry for the sort of noobish question, but I've been unable to find answers online or with the "counselor" they gave me at school, if you want to call her that... any help would be very much appreciated!
you could probably be an elementary school art teacher if you aren't concerned with making much money and spending many many years paying off student loans. and keep in mind that if the school gets any budget cuts, you and the music teacher would be first to go. but other than that, it would be an amazing job. i remember my elementary school art teacher and she was awesome, she really fostered my creativity as a child and i'm glad i had her. she was a total stereotypical hippie, and looking back i'm pretty sure she probably smoked weed.
hehe, I've been considering that lately, being an art teacher. I wouldn't have a problem with not making much money at all, because I'd really feel like I was making a difference, and that means a lot to me. My only concern is... looking back, I went to two different elementary schools, and both of my art teachers were like, master artists. Like, they could look at you and just draw a perfect portrait. And like I said, I don't have any pencil skill. I can't really draw a straight line. And that's all that concerns me about that.
well, im sure the kids won't care. and something tells me that parent teacher conferences and your job interview wont require you to sketch things either. if you want to impress the kids, do something abstract and colorful with paints. if you mess up, it can be easily covered or just made into part of the picture. i love to draw but have no artistic skill whatsoever, so i just use markers/crayons/paints to make basic shapes and forms with lots of color and keep the design busy so it looks complex but is actually extremely simplistic. its really easy to do and the finished product is always unique and interesting. i would love to be an art teacher but i have no patience with children, unfortunately.
Thanks for the advice. I will take it to heart. Sorry if i sound a bit drone-like, but I am about to fall asleep. But I mean it sincerely, thanks.
i had 3 or 4 elementary art teachers, and none of them were particularly good at art. and yes, pretty much any major/minor combination you can imagine is possible
If you can afford it, my college of choice for writing-which is an art school is Emerson. Art Institute is awesome too Both are located in Boston
Graphics design would be good. Everything you see forsale in a store a graphic design has done the packaging. I tell everyone going off to college to major in what ever they want to, plus take some electrican or welding courses in case your first choice doesn't takeoff into a career has fast has you would like it to.
My best friend is taking Graphic Design. Unfortunately, we don't have many companies around here that provide jobs in Graphic Design unless you want to work for a newspaper-which is too tedious for her. I'm helping her start a business in making her own cards, stationary, yadda yadda yadda. My fiance's aunt got me hooked on it because she makes and sells clocks, plaques, notecards, etc. I took Graphic Design in highschool and I think I could get into it if I got a job for it, but I wouldn't want to do it for the rest of my life, unless it involved starting my own business. I also think Graphic Design would be good for someone interested in art
