I just got a latitude 131L on Monday, was around 1200 with tax and after it was all said and done.
I'm pretty happy with it, nice and fast, decent sound, seems to be able to handle all I need it to do.
Really it depends how much you're willing to spend.

I have a lady friend looking for one so I did some research and according to PC Magazine' the very best as far as quality was the Mac-for pc's I believe it was Sony.-She wants to get it from Best Buy but they don't sell Dell' which I prefer for dependebility. They have HP which I would not own. They also have Gateway which did good in the ratings and was around 700.00-1gb ram-150gb hd and burner-not bad -They say that just because a company makes a great desktop does not mean they make such a good notebook-Read the PC Mag reviews-I would stay away from HP and Memorex!

I got a Dell Inspiron E1505 and I like it a lot. I'm not sure if they sell them anymore, but Dell did come out with some new laptops that are a little better than mine and a little cheaper too.

If you have the money - get a Mac, Apple makes amazing laptops with superior hardware and since it doesn't run Windows ,it's super safe and fast (it looks cool as well)
If you are looking for a cheaper laptop, just remeber that the hardware is more important than anything. Get a fast processor .big memory and if you are a gamer -a good video card (nVidia makes good VGA cards).
I would recommend NOT getting a laptop with Windows Vista on it. It's a complete waste of money and its hardware demands are huge. Dell makes ok laptops and they even have some with Linux preinstalled.

I agree on you with Vista. I have Vista. It's nice and all with a lot of cool features, but it just slows my computer down. When I had Windows XP on this thing it was much faster.

I used to work at a computer store. Toshiba's gave me the least problems.

I would say go with a mac if you have the money. If not, my Dell Inspiron B130 is so compatible with everything (so Dell). I installed Linux on it with virtually no problems. An Acer laptop sounds like a good laptop. Good luck!

Mac if you have the $

A dell if you want a pc on the cheap, I suggest one of their fine ubuntu boxes

A toshiba p205 series for anything but gaming. I have a p205-s6337 that runs linux with almost full hardware support.
