What have you had success in taking seeds from produce and using them the next year. I understand that pollenation can be a problem based on what method was used when the plant was grown but I'd like to hear any success stories. Also, when do you know a vegetable or fruit is ripe enough to take seeds from?
I've successfully grown Pinto, Black and Garbonzo beans and several dried peppers like Japon and New Mexico, etc. from the store. Although too small to produce fruits yet, I'm grown Avocado, Mango, and Apple trees from store bought produce. Also I've grown Pineapple, Potato's, Orange Tomato's, and a few others things. You could probably grow just about anything from the store as long as the seeds are ripe and haven't been damaged by refrigeration (depending on type of seed). Depends on the plant as to whether it will be true to type for its variety, the trees won't be.
We have kept many things through the years. This year we have kept rocket, fennel, beetroot and cabbage - so far. We will probably keep peas and beans too. We always save potatoes for seed.
