im not sure if thats the right forum to post this thread in, but whatever. well i am trying to stop smoking tobacco, but its a little bit harder than i thought. I am smoking for 3 or 4 years now and i seriously want to stop coz i dont want to look in the mirror one day i scare myslef. I belive i began to smoke way to early. I know its all about the hard will and wanting to stop , but damn i sometimes think that i just cant! Everytime after i smoke weed i light a cigarette without even thining that i shouldnt. Its like i forget about it all and after that, when i have already smoked it i began to think that i dont want to look like a granny when i turn 25 for example. Well the whole point of this thread was for some advises and a little help.

It's hard I must say. I, like you, started smoking too early and still wish I didn't but I do love it! Don't try and stop outright, it's best to cut down... For instance, don't smoke every time you would normally (after smoking weed, going to a bar, certain situations where you normally would smoke). Tell your friends this and make them tell you off for smoking when you shouldn't. At the same time allow yourself time every night to smoke a couple and gradually try to work your way off them... I've given up twice (I'm 25, started smoking when I was 13) and it's a bitch but it's not impossible... If you fail at first keep on trying, don't give up (well, do give up the cigs but don't give up giving up :p)... Good luck to you and by the way, don't worry about looking like an old granny by the time you're 25... You're beautiful!!

    Good luck!

I chained smoked from 14 to 18 and quit when I turned 18. I was starting to get sick and I sounded so gross when I talked, with all the coughing, that I decided it was time. And thankfully if you quit soon enough your lungs can repair all of the damage done.... I think I learned in gym class.

But anyways I used the patch, but I recommend starting with the medium dosage and not the large one since it pumps so much nicotin into you (And I chained smoked a pack and a half a day up til then!!! so it's alot). After you apply it TAPE it!!! the one I used itched so bad I HAD to scratch at it and the tape kept it on regardless.

I also stopped hanging out with my friends during this period since they all smoked. It helped me quit and if they are really good friends they'll understand your absense. I never would of been able to do so unless I locked myself up in my house away from any temptations for a month or two.

hope that helped :) and it is sooo worth it once you succeed :)

Go to the gym, or take up a physical activity like a sport or martial art. Anything that will strengthen your lungs, improve your stamina, and burn calories (when you quit your sense of taste becomes stronger so you might start to eat more).

As for smoking weed: I suggest you either use a vaporizer or switch to eating pot instead. Despite the medical benefits of marijuana, any form of smoke can cause damage to your lungs.

It;s all about associating the things that make you light up with what you hate about smoking, now when i see friends smoke, instead of wanting one i am reminded of sick it makes my stomach for example.

But you are right it will age you and kill you, perhaps thats what you should focus on?

Anyway, truth is i don't think it is completely about 'hard will' try and make the process as easy as possible for yourself.

i was just about to post a thread about quitting. I really want to but ive always looked at cigarettes as a comfort for whenim stressed out and i promised my boyfriend saturday on my birthday that i would stop smoking but then yesterday i had him buy me a pack and i felt so bad and i still do. I really want to quit. It will make my teeth whiter and ill be healthier but i just dont know how to. Ive said this a million times but really i want this to be my last pack. I just need to find things to do instead of smoking. Any suggestions? I really need to stop because i smoke the worst kind of cigarettes, Newport 100s, GROSS! Please someone give me advice so i can make my boyfriend proud and myself.

Casie, if you want to look 40-45 when you are 30, then go ahead and keep smoking. But since you don't...
Just quit. It is ALL a question of your willpower. Find something to replace smoking, but try to stay away from harder drugs or alcohol. ;)

this is what has helped me:i havent smoked for 3 months. i had been extremely addicted.

you have to go 3 weeks w/0 the addictive substance in order to break the physical addiction. after that all that remains is the psychological attatchment.

if your willing to go all the way to save your health/looks.etc than i promise this will work wonders:
    vegan/vegetarian diet
    exercise (15 minutes a day)
lots of water ( i drank 2 waterbottles a day with mint bags in them)
    hiking
    diversion
    sunlight

quitting all other drugs is the best way to go for sure results but if your not willing to do that than all my pointers will surely help aid you..they worked for me.
also the patch did a little bit.
i disagree with the theory of tapering off..cold turkey is best but if you feel like you cant do that than i guess its easier for the mind&body to slowly quit.

First off I want to say CONGRATULATIONS to everyone here who has quit and to those who are trying, I always figured if you can quit smoking cigs. than you can do anything! Because this addiction has been liken to a heroine addiction!

I quit smoking in 2001, cold turkey. Now every time I tried before, was just practice and I relapsed but this was my method:

I switched brands of tobacco first. I went for the pure tobacco without all the hundreds (not a joke, look it up on the philip morris website) of chemicals to come off of, will make it easier for you in the long run.

Also, the brand I used *american spirit* the tobacco was really strong, so I only smoked like half a ciggy at a time, so that help with cutting down. Thus less nicotine to come off of.

So actually, to admit something really silly, but maybe not as it worked for me, I spontaneously quit without a plan, but it was also New Year's resolution. So I gave my addiction to the resolution gods.

THey have it and they can keep it. It's not mine anymore, they take care of it. I figured people give over addictions all the time to "the powers that be" so why not mine? I mean the Universe is huge, so why not? Maybe then that feeling of a power greater than me taking it over, instead of me tending to it would help.

Then when I was surrendering to the physical withdrawals, I allowed myself to feel it. That's something that we don't allow ourselves to do, actually feel the withdrawals from the tobacco (not for very long) It was okay because I knew it was temporary, and I talked to the air a lot. I also was working pretty hard at the time, doing piece work (getting paid by the piece that I produced) and using my hands a lot, so they were always engaged.

I would say: I'm addicted to tobacco! That's all I am, is addicted and I can't have it, so sad!#*$& darn it! I want to smoke! #((#($ so what!

My coworkers bared with me thank Goddess!

I just got used to not being able to have what I most wanted, a cigarette.

Because, here's the big secret: after about a week, maybe even 3 days... that cigarette image in your mind that desire to bring that smoke into your body, isn't the filet minion that you are imagining, not the juicy yummy treat, it's a grubby stepped on rubbery ashy gross macdonald's burger that's 50 years old.

It won't taste the same again. It won't be the same again, that relationship with the ritual of smoking. This is what I remember every time I am triggered to smoke.

I confess, even now I wish I could smoke a cigarette, but I treat that milli-second of wishing to smoke like a long lost girlfriend whom I'll never see again. It's gone and I can't get it back.

I have asthma now, so even if I relapse, it'll never be a good smoke for me, it'll never be the same, so I don't bother.

Now what I did for the oral fixation while coming off the nicotine was eat vinegary things, like pickles and radishes and such. I don't know why, I just was flailing out into the chaos of addiction gone mad and that was what I came up with.

Maybe it was the crunch and the sucking that help me.

I do encourage folks to visit the phillip morris website. They lost a landmark court case and had to produce educational materials on the physical effects of tobacco.

The chemicals that they put in the cigarette are horrifying! Plutonium 210 (radio active) embalming fluid, salt peter...

Hideous! And also the heat of the smoke is really high, I thinks it's really up there, like 310 degrees, imagine what that does to the layers of tissue lining your mouth, throat, bronchi, alveoli of your lungs.

Lastly but not least, my dear friend died this spring at the age of 49 from respiratory failure caused by emphysema. He smoked both tobacco and reefer. I was there right when he died. I wasn't an easy way to go.

So that's why I always think to myself, if I could quit smoking tobacco I can do anything, and it's a really good feeling knowing that.
